Not on my own account since I’m not very well off on money, but when I went to a Buddy’s place, I played his IS-6 for a bit.
The thing about the IS-6 is that, similarly to the IS-2, it depends on Volumetric. The IS-6’s mantlet can, and will at times, absorb absurd amounts of damage. On top of that, it’s a tiny weak point. If you understand how to play a tank like the IS-6, you’ve got to dance while they aim at you.
Volumetric armor is sometimes worse, people always use the IS2 case to prove this, but they forget another case that the Tiger 2 (P) also has a similar one, which is not too much different, and the IS2 can now be pen by some of SPAA. IS6’s volumetric armor makes the turret protection worse if you know how to aim that. even 75mm gun can pen you, you need be more careful and patient to aiming at these ussr heavy tanks, IS6’s mobility is good, but the turret turning speed is awful, which is what you can use.
HESH is the other case, such kind of thing could happen on other tanks, even Panther or tiger.
That’s the wired case, as a medium tank at this BR, the armor of IS6 is useless, everyone has heat or APDS which can easily pen you, and the reload time is also faster than IS6, as a heavy tank, it is the worst one, maybe you can check the thunder skill as a reference, the data of all USSR heavy tanks at 7.7, the IS6 is the worst.
The T32 is sluggish with a 90mm. The IS-6 has a 122, which does significantly more damage. The Somua SM isn’t remotely comparable.
In my 7000 hours, I’ve never had that issue with Panthers and Tigers.
If the IS-6 is useless because its armor does nothing, then why do you think the IS-4M is better? It has the same gun, but is significantly slower and sees the exact same HEAT slingers…
Ah yes, a tank with an almost 65% winrate, with almost a 3 k/d ratio, sure is suffering.
Sounds like someone’s suffering from a fat load of skill issue.
IS-6 is fine where it is and if you’re having troubles getting kills in it, you’re genuinely just bad at the game. SO, I decided to look you up, Sunfighter and lo’n’behold, you can’t even score above a 1 k/d ratio. I’m fully convinced this is a skill issue on your behalf.
Outside of armor, the reverse speed also has a lot to do with its overall survivability, same applies to IS-7 and Object 279, these mfs usually escape most breech/barrel damage situation.
t32 has better front armor, which means that IS6 can’t easily pen that, and it also has apcr to against maus, which is IS6 can’t, for Somua, after buff its armor, somua can perfectly against IS6, there are just small places that IS6 can pen it.
You don’t even watch YouTube? there are tons of cases to show that happened on hesh.
So I really doubt that you have really understood their different, or have you ever played them seriously, the 90mm heat or 76 mm heat for IS4 is almost useless, each time you may just kill one crew member or just a hit, which is IS6 can’t do, also the APDS, 20 pounders APDS can hardly damage that.
The IS-4 and IS-3 also can’t hurt a Maus frontally. That’s not an issue specifically seen only in the IS-6. The T32 is also a miserable vehicle.
The Somua SM is far from bad. I was making a point that its gun struggles against the IS-6 frontally despite being absurdly busted at its BR. The IS-6 isn’t helpless like you claim. It’s a mobile heavy tank.
While it is true that the Panther’s mantlet and Tiger’s driver port have volumetric issues, that is not exclusive to them either. The T-34, M4, etc etc, all have similar issues when it comes to overlapping plates. Russian Tanks do it far more than every other tank simply because of their rounded armor, which screws with the calculator.
I’ve played the IS-4 extensively and killed the IS-4 extensively. Last night alone, in 1 game I killed 5 of them with a single hit for each.
Hell, my friend even got a trapshot on one the other day while in his Char-25 going max speed in the air after jumping a crater like a Ramp.
The IS-4M is far from invincible and any HEAT weapon that works on an IS-6 will work on an IS-4 just the same. Even the Maus can’t stop HEAT weapons reliably, so I don’t know why you think an IS-4 can.
I haven’t denied that, the issue is comparing to other similar which also mobile, it is one of the worst one.
I am talking about the hesh issue. not volumetric one, after you said your IS2 survived from 183mm hesh.
Heat can be 76mm, 90mm or 105mm, even 114mm or 120mm, I am talking about 76/90mm, if you really played IS6, you can find the different, as you do have played so many times of IS4.
The IS-4M is sluggish and a brick. The IS-6 has armor but maintains the ability to react.
It doesn’t change anything. Tigers and Panthers don’t shrug off Hesh unless you hit spaced armor, which is what the game intends. They may absorb a hit with a bit of damage, but they don’t outright stop HESH like Russian Tanks do nonstop.
There are two reasons for this.
Firstly, Russian Heavy Tanks are nearly impossible to overpressure due to their design. They are extremely rounded and don’t have exposed roof armor unlike most other heavy tanks.
Secondly, Russian Tanks have tons of fuel and fuel outright stops fragmentation from HESH. If you do penetrate a Russian Tank, the Fuel tanks will often absorb all the damage.
76mm HEAT found on the German Bulldog, T92, and a few others can still easily take out any heavy tank in the game when used properly since they have about 360mm of penetration. HEAT is a needle of damage that requires good aim to hit ammunition. It’s pretty easy to hit ammunition at 7.7 since the entire tank is filled with it.
You cannot angle the IS-4M against anyone who knows what they are doing. The Tank has a massive Driver Port weak point. The Lower Plate is also exceptionally vulnerable. HEAT vehicles tend to be extremely mobile compared to Heavy Tanks, so you’ll be lucky to even angle against one.
380mm of penetration is more than your front plate can reliably tank and your sides are extremely vulnerable to HEAT rats.
The vehicle is good at 7.7 and about as tanky as a Maus, but even the Maus folds quickly under HEAT-FS.
The point of angling is minimizing where the enemy can shoot. If you don’t angle then the enemy can shoot anywhere to kill you. If you angle then the enemy is forced to shoot at small weakspots. That difference alone can save your life as it did for me.
