Seriously, the only efficient way to take down drones is with cannons or missiles that you manually guide to them and that’s when the hitbox decides to work and doesn’t just ignore missile damage.
Before recording the drone shown below, I was shooting at another one and I literally wasted 8 missiles, and all 8 missed a drone at 1 km distance.
They should either increase the drone hitbox or add a flight time limit of 1~2 minutes, since we all know drones depend on batteries or fuel.
Sure, you could still use up to 2 drones without needing to go back to a captured base to restock them.
It’s just an idea, but I’d really like to be able to take down drones properly with AA vehicles like the Ozelot, so my team doesn’t keep getting spotted for everyone to see.
Agreed, my personal suggestion is drones get a 1 to 2 min flight time then go on CD for between 1.5 to 3 mins (while they RTB and recharge of screen). given how powerful the new scouting (and annoying the callout spam) is having 100% up time with how had to kill they are is pretty OP.
Also there needs to be a fix for how they can just pull back the throttle to go cold and dodge IR missiles, they use electric motors so the heat difference should be irrelevant, at least in the time between the launch and impact of a stinger.
Honestly, drones really need some kind of “cooldown” or pause, whatever form that takes, so the team can actually breathe on the battlefield. And yeah, they absolutely need to increase the drone hitbox.
As you can see in the video, sometimes the missile passes LITERALLY right next to the drone, or even through it, and nothing happens.
And this should be easy to fix. I really don’t see how increasing the size of a hitbox in a game could be that difficult.
It also doesn’t help with the weird evasive movements they can take when they are being piloted, I have my doubts a basic flying wing drone could handle that with out going into a flat spin or something.
Or maybe it’s Tor missile too puny/too weak to hurt the almighty scout drones bro however strike drones is always one-shot
And the scout drone when performing the swimmer butterfly stroke they are literally unhittable, if y’all are old enough you can remember the bunny hop in counter strike.
well imagine flying carboard weighting couple kg’s, and getting blasted on missile. there is no shockwawe / blastwawe that could hurt that vibranium made little pesky thing.
Yes, scout drones hit boxes dont work. Best was shooting all 8 missiles on adats, only to get either hit or looking that missile exploding next to it and no hit.
it hasnt happened anymore lately, but i also havent played much lately, not sure if its changed or not. but i used to hit recon drones with 23mm from my shilka and they would survive lol. it would take 2 or 3 hits to kill it, otherwise they would just fly away and i never got the kill
tiny recon drone eats 2 23mm shells, meanwhile a b-17 bomber breaks into 4 pieces from a split second burst. never change war thunder
Iris T works well vs drones, the annoying recon ones as well as the attack drones spawing 9km out.
But I also have issues to hit them with Gepard gun SPAA. Irl there is training footage how Gepards even wreck small quadcopter drones in a rather extensive training campaign in Qatari desert.
Ingame it doesn’t work. Maybe with that new radar screen + autoguided fire??? Never tried that.
I never have any issues (Rapier, Roland, ADATS), and I think it strongly depends on the missile itself.
You’re working with IR missiles, and I assume drones have a very weak IR signature…
No. Why make it artificially larger?
Do we know that? 1-2 minutes is unrealistically low. Just a short Google search yields small drones with flight times of typically around 40 minutes.
Note: I do however agree that ground launched IR SAM’s seem to underpeform quite a bit. Don’t have much experience witht hem , but yesterday wasted 10 Mistral’s at a jet and never got a hit even with optimal launch envelope and allt he tricks I could think of…
Sure, i said : the only efficient way to take down drones is with cannons or missiles that you manually guide.
If that’s the reason the missile can’t hit it properly on its own, then making the drone NOT heat-trackable would be better than forcing a player to waste all 4 missiles trying to hit it.
This time is based on War Thunder match durations. No match lasts more than 10 minutes, or only rarely stretches close to the full 35 minutes.
It’s a fair amount of time for a player to get oriented on the map and do 2–3 enemy spots, which is much better than someone hiding behind a rock or building the entire match farming intel assists and marking every target for their team, completely unbalancing the game.
We already know that very few players are actually interested in air defense systems, and when they do try them and see all 4 missiles miss a drone, it just reinforces the idea that they should abandon that vehicle type altogether until they reach top tier.
