Why are bombers so painfully fragile? *Rant

Again irl experiences play no role. And i am quite sure that the majority of RAF bombers were lost due to fuel fires - nightfighters aimed specifically between 2 engines in order to ignite the fuel tanks there - and to avoid to hit bomb loads by firing at the fuselage as combat ranges were much closer.

The simplified damage model has other reasons - it boils down that gaijin changed delayed kill mechanics like control cables destroyed (“lost tail control”) into instant kills whilst adding more spectacular effects.

That is one reason why in the past a B-29 lost (some years ago) all of a sudden both wings simultaneously even if you hit just one…they reverted this, but the basic principle (instant kills before delayed kills) remains the same.

They need to rework the SL and RP modifiers and give them a Buff to tanking damage, futhermore here is a list of missions i can come up with… to help diversify the gameplay surrounding bombers and strike Aircraft, within a dynamic campign map mode (akin to world war Mode)

Strategic Bombing Missions:

Industrial Complexes: Target vital enemy infrastructure such as factories, power plants, and supply depots. These missions are crucial as they disrupt the enemy’s production capabilities and overall war effort. Successfully destroying these targets will yield high SL (Silver Lions) and RP (Research Points) rewards due to their strategic importance. For instance, a successful raid on a factory producing aircraft parts could severely impact the enemy’s air force production.

Infrastructure: Focus on key logistical points like bridges, railways, and ports. Disrupting these targets will sever enemy supply lines and transportation networks, causing chaos and slowing down their ability to move troops and resources. Successful missions will provide substantial rewards and create strategic advantages for your team. Picture a well-timed bombing run that destroys a critical railway bridge, delaying enemy reinforcements.

Tactical Bombing Missions:

Frontline Support: Offer direct support to ground forces by targeting enemy tanks, artillery, and troop concentrations. This will help your team gain ground and earn additional SL and RP. For example, a precision strike on an enemy artillery position could save your ground troops from heavy bombardment, turning the tide of battle.

Airfield Strikes: Attack enemy airfields to destroy parked aircraft and disrupt their air operations. This weakens the enemy’s immediate air support and yields moderate rewards. Imagine the satisfaction of a successful airfield strike that leaves the enemy scrambling for air cover.

Specialized Missions:

Reconnaissance: Conduct missions to gather intelligence on enemy positions. Completing these missions will provide bonus SL and RP. You might fly over enemy territory, taking photos of their defenses, which can be crucial for planning future attacks.

Escort Missions: Team up with fighter escorts to protect your bomber from enemy interceptors. Successfully completing these missions ensures your safety and grants additional rewards. It’s a team effort that highlights the importance of cooperation.

Gameplay Enhancements:

Dynamic Weather and Time of Day: Introduce varying weather conditions (e.g., rain, snow, fog) and different times of day (dawn, dusk, night) to add realism and challenge. Flying a bombing mission in a storm or under the cover of night requires skill and determination. Completing missions under these conditions should yield higher rewards due to the increased difficulty. Imagine a night-time bombing raid where you rely on instrument readings and the glow of enemy fires to find your targets.

Target Prioritization: Implement a system where players can prioritize targets based on their strategic importance. For example, choosing to hit a heavily fortified enemy headquarters might provide a bonus compared to a less critical target. This system encourages strategic thinking and rewards players for making tactical decisions.

Mission Chains: Create mission chains where completing a series of related objectives unlocks additional rewards. For instance, start with destroying an industrial complex, then follow up by targeting supply convoys trying to replenish the lost resources. Completing the entire chain provides substantial rewards and keeps the gameplay engaging and layered.

Rewards and Incentives:

Bonus Multipliers: Introduce bonus multipliers for completing missions within a specific time frame or with minimal damage to the bomber. This encourages efficient and skillful gameplay. For example, finishing a bombing run under heavy anti-aircraft fire without taking significant damage could earn you extra SL and RP.

Achievement System: Implement an achievement system that rewards players for completing specific bombing objectives. These could include milestones like destroying a set number of strategic targets or successfully completing a series of missions. Achievements not only provide bragging rights but also offer bonus SL and RP, encouraging players to strive for excellence.

Community Events: Organize large-scale community events where players participate in coordinated bombing campaigns. These events could feature special objectives and unique rewards. For instance, a weekend event focusing on a major bombing offensive against a fictional enemy nation could provide increased SL and RP earnings, as well as exclusive in-game items for participants.

These expanded ideas aim to make the bombing experience in War Thunder more engaging, strategic, and rewarding, thus giving bomber and escorts more meaning with the game, whats your thoughts on this…

Yeah, this is the otherside of the coin. Even if you manage to punch through and get into a position to drop your bombs. There is no guarantee there is anything to drop some bombs on, let alone all of them. The rewards then are based around getting all bombs off, not a few, which you rarely manage to do either

Well one way to solve it is have the fighters spawn slightly in front of the bombers at the same altitude and thus this would be the objective of the fighters to punch a hole for the bombers to get through. Have three to four non select-able spawn points so each bomber has a target that they don’t have to fight over.

It’s more about the lazy mechanics of the maps than the survive ability of the aircraft. The way it is now they are trying to simulate the scramble but in doing so you lose fighter escort. If you want scramble then the bombers need to spawn at maximum altitude.

Bombers also barely impact a match, any fighter that kills a bunch of soft targets will bleed way more tickets than a bomber killing a few bases.

Personally, I dislike playing bombers but they should have a place in warthunder

Yer, I agree. I have always been a fan of real WW2 bombers and it feels kind of cool to virtually fly one but I hate that there is very little choice in operation. It feels like a giant funnel rather than strategic bombing. They need to sit down and really hash it out about what point there is to having them. I think allowing bombers to use a re-spawn rather than have to land and then try to get back to twenty thousand feet again might help.

Makes sense!

@#$k me, oh yer, most bombers would peel off their wings. I think you are missing the point of what a bomber does, it bombs and the point of a mission is to destroy a target not dog fight. I don’t seem to remember a WW2 movie or documentary about the famous WW2 dog fighting strategic bombers.
