I mean, we’ve all fallen victim to it.
Sometimes an enemy tank behind a wall with its engine on cannot be heard unless you have LOS or maybe there’s a helicopter flying 500m over the battle field and it’s literally silent when irl if a chopper flies within 3-4km of my house the windows shake and the reverbing, thumping rotor sound wakes up even a sleeping bear…
Maybe gaijin modeled it as a proximity thing but we have to understand that sound coming from the sky doesn’t fade as much as sound coming from parallel to the earth’s surface
So there is a really really old rumor that said that “the game engine can only handle like 4 sounds at once so it has to choose between the ones that are important.” Probably an extreme overexaggeration, but sometimes it is noticeable that the game cuts certain sounds in favor of other ones.
For example tank engine, last I remember I could only hear like 5 at a time including my own. Aircraft can’t be heard from the same distances they would be irl; there are accounts of the noise from Allied bombers flying over Europe waking people in their flightpath up because it was so loud. They also can’t be heard until they are right on top of you, and this isn’t just because of the speed of sound, I’ve had it happen to me in 2.0-3.0 matches. In game you can’t hear a plane beyond like 1km, and sometimes you can’t hear it until it is already overhead. Helicopters should be way louder, the military ones especially have huge engine power and will make a ton of noise.
I think the “sound render” distance is just too low for what the game practically is. A sound not rendering until the sound emitter is within 2km or so is not realistic for the types of vehicles the game has anymore, sadly.
i share that understanding. its near impossible to have such a complex game but not be able to overlay a few soundtracks over one another.
its a proximity calculation issue imo.
theres no obstacles blocking the transfer of sound waves directly downwards hence this works albeit the faster and higher the aircraft is moving the later you get to hear the sound.
exactly
if the vechile is above mach then you should hear it when it passes over you but all else you should hear it (in game) wayyyy earlier and from such a long distance. if its accurate about the 2km sound rendering then thats highly disappointing tbh
I am using a good 5.1 Sound system, and am suffering from the sound design aswell. Very bad actually.
The differences between the gamemodes are so extreme, when i have everything dialed in for tanks, if i go to planes i cant hear shit, and when i play naval, the guns (especially 38cm) are so loud its insufferable.
Also i have to turn down the base on the subwoofer when i switch to playing war thunder from listening to music, because the base of artillery landing shakes my floor.
And i have turned it all the way down to 50%, and enemy engines up to 100%, yet they are still too quiet and artillery causes earthquakes.
