What happened to belly landing?

I’ve been seeing lots of people ‘crash’ their planes in the kill feed, and recently I have been dying a lot with almost no damage to the airframe when I land, so I know for sure I’m not landing too hard, but my pilot just dies in the bely landing.

This happened to me in the J35XS and F5.

Is this happening to anyone else?

If it’s happening, there’s a simple way to fix this problem (the g key)

learn to use your landing gear.

belly landings being the most practical way to land has been a really moronic part of the game for years.

Quite frankly. belly landing should only be done when you dont have these marvelous things called landing gear and if/when that occurs, you should land especially gently, practically stalling the aircraft, the few times ive done it of late, ive had 0 issues.

Yup. I think they should double/triple the repair time if you belly land.

just ask any komet pilot how his back fared.

Have had more instances of random explosions as of last week but i really cant be too mad, i shouldnt be lazy and actually do my approach right. Gaijins poor coding is keeping me in check

Belly landing is faster than landing with landing gear. But I’ve never had any issue with dying from it?
(Edit: oh its tiger tank)

Im one of those people that aims to touch down right at the correct point on the runway, at the right speed, nice and gently, flaring just as I touch down :D

too much MSFS :P

Just to do my due diligence, as there have been issues in the past. Both touched down without any issue on my belly. Heck J35 was a doddle, between the drag chute and very low stall speed

So you are proabbly just landing too fast and/or too heavy (in terms of wieght, i.e too much fuel) and/or with too much vertical velocity. Sometimes its better to keep the throttle on low, so you are still moving forward rather than down. Even if you are still bleeding speed

I only belly land when using the F-15 (I always stall at slow speeds and if I go even a bit faster I take more time to brake and sometimes go out of the runaway or have to basically break my gear to actually brake).
You must know that in some maps runways are a bit higher than grass so the belly landing has to be done fully on the runway, second is speed, you have to go at a decently fast but not too fast so that the landing is more horizontal rather than vertical and then, really, just use the landing gear because the time you use to brake is the same amount of time you use to repair.

i took full advantage of no damage model in MSFS. war thunder stops such stupid antics much better.

I still stick to the limits of my landing gears as i want my approach to be as fast as possible so im in as little downtime as possible. very useful when ive got squadmates screaming about CAS

There is actually a quite significant advantage to properly landing, and that’s that (if undamaged), you can J out on the runway to spawn back in faster.

So it is actually optimal to land gear down, even though gear up brings you to a stop faster.

(Yes you can belly land without taking damage, but that actually takes a pretty sizable amount of care with regards to your speed and approach angle).

its also a gamble for if you will randomly explode or bounce back into the air to then explode.

Its a bad habit that war thunder has allowed to go unchecked for a very long time, do wish that belly landings (even when “perfect”) did deal substancial damage to the airframe like it realistically should

Yeah, I only belly-land when forced to due to gear damage or my plane is barely flying missing a wing and cannot afford to slow down that much. Also most of those recent cases I ever bothered were spading Rocket 262s, which due to massive engines actually can “belly” land without the belly touching the ground at all. Even in those I still don’t do so unless forced to.

Years ago when jets were forced to land on runways too small for their proper use, this was the go-to, but these days runways are more than big enough in most situations.

some props still have an issue with runways being too small as their brakes are abhorrently poor so force belly landings (or more practically a normal landing followed by a firm pull of the rudded to sheer it off once youre at the end of the runway to stop) it isnt very common to come across though

nah they dont really need to imo, if you havent taken any damage you can already skip the repair/rearm time

i dont think so. Just have even perfect belly landings actually deal some damage instead of being a way to land without skill scott free (until the game remembers its made by gaijin and causes a random explosion or tail to fall off)

i like my plane to use its breakes

Could’ve sworn this became much more common as soon as the runways were visually revamped in that update less than 2 years ago. Like ignoring the hitbox issue with the runway lights if I remember right the runway literally flipped you over sometimes if you landed without gear, but maybe I’m just crazy.

Now tiger, here’s how to land:

1. Prepare the approach

  • Reduce throttle to ~30–40% while approaching the airfield (Use the airbrake (H) )
  • Line up with the runway from a long, straight approach
  • Lower landing gear (G) once you’re slow and stable
  • Deploy flaps to landing (usually F twice)

2. Control Your Speed

  • Aim for 220–300 km/h (varies by jet; lighter jets can go slower)
  • Use airbrake (H) if available to avoid overspeeding (both the F-5 and the J35XS have one)
  • Keep the nose slightly up; don’t dive at the runway

3. Final Approach

  • Throttle down to 10–20%
  • Maintain a gentle descent (about 3–5°)
  • Make small, smooth corrections: jets respond quickly

4. Touchdown

  • Just before the runway, cut throttle to 0%
  • Gently pull up to flare (reduce descent rate)
  • Let the main wheels touch first, then the nose

5. Slow Down Safely

  • Deploy airbrakes / drag chute if equipped (ALT + G)
  • Use wheel brakes carefully (don’t slam them) (B)
  • Keep the aircraft straight with rudder

6. Stop & Repair

  • Roll to a stop on the runway
  • Stay still for a few seconds to repair, reload, and refuel

This is often faster than bellylanding, because if you’re undamaged you can (J)-out immediately to respawn again!

Belly landing has also been punished by gaijin, because since a couple updates ago it has become more realistic (belly landing speeds for damage have been lowered, meaning you have to belly land even more carefully now with jets).
