Sometimes I hear the argument that scouting was good because it was the historical role light tanks had.
I think this argument if flawd because:
Not all light tanks had reconnisence as their historical role.
In War Thunder, vehicles should be represented only by their historical attributes, and the player should then be tasked with using the pros and cons that result from them correctly. The role of a tank must be performed by the player; no “historical roles” should be introduced as mechanics that are intended to reward the player without requiring any effort.
It’s not that light tanks generally had any technical advantages that would be too bad if they weren’t represented in the game. While some, depending on their year, had better radio equipment, many tanks simply weren’t used for reconnaissance because they were too expensive for the task. The only physical advantages scout tanks have over many tanks are that they are often smaller and more mobile. But these two qualities don’t need to be represented in the game through scouting, as they already exist in the game.
You wouldn’t give a Tiger a mechanic as a buff just because it has good armor. So why give tanks scouting as a buff because they are fast?
Why don’t other tanks have the privilege of receiving a buff for their real-life role?
Howitzers, for example, have to engage in close combat in War Thunder, and I’m glad they don’t have the same role as in reallife because then it would be like in WoT.
Also, die role of an IS-3 was definitely not to get one-shot by a HEAT-FS. Why can’t it smash WW2 tanks all day as its role was intended to?
I know I’m exaggerating here, but this point in particular shows that in War Thunder, it shouldn’t matter what role a tank had in real life. All a tank needs is to fit well into the in-game climate with its own role, which is determined by its physical characteristics. Most of the time, their in-game role is very close to their real-life role anyway.
Scouting is not implemented accurately at all in War Thunder. If you spot an enemy in War Thunder and they take cover, they will still be tracked by a marker. In reality, it’s impossible for a tank crew to know the movement of an enemy without visual contact.
I also doubt that in real life, the position of many individual enemies can be continuously transmitted simultaneously.
Ever since the announcement for scouting improvements are coming soon was made, been seeing more and more scouters flying around. Please make it a priority to down them when you see them. I’ve been unable to play strategically due to them none stop scouting. Just like CAS is annoying to some, scout drones are annoying to me lol so please shoot them down if you can. Don’t let it stay up there scouting your team and you.
I queued into a 9.0 battle and this is what it got. 19 out of 28 players played either light tanks or tanks designed to counter light tanks. As far as I’m aware no tech tree is majority light tanks at that BR. Obviously this match took only about 2-3 minutes until it was decided.
Yes exactly, light tanks at these BRs have no drawbacks compared to mediums and they get these unnecessary reconnaissance features that should only exist in AB.
Look. Realistic is meant as a mode that differs from Simulator in that it’s a bit easier.
Scouting, especially in BRs 8.0 - 10.0, is a too powerfull oversimplification of the gameplay. It changes the gameplay so much that entire tactical approaches that used to be a part of RB have completely disappeared - and that’s exactly what I’m talking about.
As I said, I’m not saying that it’s too easy to spot targets; I’m saying that scouting makes it impossible to remain undetected if you want, and that’s exactly what destroys a central element of RB.
I think the original solution, where you only were marked when you were hit, was the best. It’s the perfect balance between making the game easier and allowing you to move relatively unnoticed.
Because with scouting, you mostly have to play like in Arcade. It’s not enough to not attract too much enemy attention anymore, you now have to play full defensively because you could be scouted any time.
I strongly hate the new mechanic for the drone scout, this is just not how I think drones should work, like slow and prettly rewardless scouting for how long you need to wait.
The first thing I dislike is how you get penalised for just activating the drone and spotting without abusing the tactic. I just played the first map with it and got the scout penalty(lessrewards and penalty) for spotting while having a drone at the battlefield(it doesnt even show the cooldown of the scout).
And when I think of how the spotting system now works is just beyond what you would actually expect of.
WW2 tanks can spot through like anything and have them spotted and can give intel on the enemy much faster as modern UAV´s.
There are a few ways to actually fix them properly than to just penalise the normal scout on the IFV´s.
just make 2 spotting system and give the normal scout like a 5-10 second cooldown when switching out of the drone(ik there is a minimap) but atleast in this scenario you can only spot standing targets with it.
make spotting faster in general, less cooldown but also less time being spotted(just find a good balance)
There was more scouted but they died quick lol so far i hate how it functions. No room for strategic plays. Luckily I wasn’t scouted none stop and played it ok. But other games…omg, wherever i went there is already a tank waiting for me looking at my direction without me knowing. While near the full enemy team kept being scouted non stop too. Feels nice…but I feel down bad about it cuz now they can’t strategically play either since I know their precise locations.
Please Gaijin, if your reading this, remove the GPS tracking like behavior lmao
This would solve a lot of the issues making scouting more realistic. Just too add, once a friendly shows up in that area and no tank is there, the marker should instantly disappears.
Yes, scouting is such a tactically powerful mechanic that it often leaves players with no room for tactical play. It’s so dominant that it takes up all the space in terms of tactical gameplay.
Especially with the new scouting drone mechanics now, you basically have to play as if you are being scouted constantly.
How about a new gamemode where you can actually play without being marked like in Arcade?
For the longest time that used to be the role of Realistic but it has degenerated to Arcade 2.0.
And no, Sim is no alternative, it has several issues.
Literally, all I’m asking for is being able to play without the game constantly shouting into the enemies faces where I am at, that’s one of the main reasons why I switched from WoT to this game.
Just some ideas i had, copied over from the “scouting through uavs” thread. Not sure if someone already brought those up since i read some of this thread, not sure if all: (they are more like first thoughts i had what could maybe be changed to improve on the situation, not sure if it would actually be good or only have further negative downsides)
Sim could be an awesome alternative, id mainly play that if they would adress the captured vehicle problem and introduce a mechanic which makes it easier to request friendly positions or send yours. Together with a spawn point system like in rb it would be awesome imo. It has better, bigger maps in the rotations (not enough :-( ), more challenging aiming system, weakspots way harder to hit aka armor is viable, longer matches which usually are not only bumrush cap xyz. And way WAY more challenging for cas and planes in general.
just unfortunately not enough players, which results in too long queue times and not all brs playable at all times (fine by me, difficult for ppl that want to use it for grinding/spading)
So first of all your proposes are very good. I am pro removing scouting and squadmarkers completely but your proposes would be a compromise that would fix a lot of the biggest issues.
And another problem I have with sim is, that some matchups are outdated, Char 25ts play against Kingtigers for example.
Also, I like the 3rd person camera in RB since it allows you to spot campers. Sometimes, due to the faulty rendering system, there is just no engine sounds.
they just shouldnt make the scouting this accurate would be enough in my opinion…
for squadron markers yep they are unfair and I doubt gaijin will ever remove it(wouldnt do it for ab and rb(dont know the sim state))…and to be fair even a voicechat is unfair advantage just calling there is some spaa in spawn and your cas can set his cam via map there is an advantage. So I doubt you can ever make it fair.
