War Thunder Survey: What do People Enjoy About the Game, And What Don't They?

I’ve wanted to make this post for a while just out of personal interest, but with the increasing amount of controversy surrounding the game’s state, I thought now would be a good time.

With this survey, I want to find out how happy people are with the overal state of the game, and what aspects they think need more or less attention. Maybe Gaijin could use this as well to get some insight into how the community percieves the game and the developers.

Please answer each question honestly, and let me know if you think anything should be added or adjusted about this survey. If you feel like any of the questions don’t really apply to you specifically, or if you don’t have any strong oppinions, just don’t answer them. Afterwards I’d love to hear your full thoughts in the comments as well!

*Regarding the next question, I have since been informed that the infantry mode doesn’t really take resources away from the base game, and is from a different team or department. I will not adjust the poll as it could break it, but just bear this in mind :)

[How do you feel about the recent infantry mode in relation to the base game?]
  • I think it’s a great adition that could open up great opportunities for the game as a whole.
  • It’s very nice, but it wasn’t really what I was hoping for.
  • It doesn’t impact me, I don’t really care.
  • It has some nice potential, but the developers should prioritize investing recourses into the base game first.
  • It’s a waste of recources, the base game needs the attention far more.

[Do you feel like your feedback is heard by the developers?]
  • Yes, I feel very heard and I think Gaijin has a good amount of contact with the community.
  • Most big problems get through, but I would like to see more from the developers.
  • It’s fine/I don’t really care.
  • We hear too little from the developers.
  • No, I feel like we only get through to Gaijin with major effort, and we really need clearer communication.

[Say a competitor to War Thunder were to suddenly show up that is better in almost every way (whatever this means for you personally), how likely are you to switch to this new game?]
  • I would switch immediately!
  • I would primarily play the new game, but I’d definitely play War Thunder sometimes as well.
  • I’d start playing both games pretty equally.
  • I’d play the new game from time to time, but I’d mostly stick to War Thunder.
  • I might try it out, but I likely wouldn’t play the new game much at all, and I’d just stick to War Thunder.

Truly War Thunder’s biggest issue, no Bewup

Exactly!

The game is good enough but it needs massive reworks or overhauls in order to be considered an actually good game.

I wouldn’t call it very bad, but it certainly isn’t good.

Overall it’s balanced ok, but some nations are notably weaker than others at several BRs for no apparent reason.

Russian bias is a skill issue dogwhistle.

Overall the biggest issues I have with the game are the economy, balance and/or decompression, the mechanics/gameplay of mainly air RB, and the overall number/quality/type of additions.

Even with premium the grind is unbearably slow and you may not even make SL.
The compression in air RB above 8.0 is just ridiculous, and an F-106 shouldn’t go from facing early sabres/any 8.3, but it shouldn’t be facing Magic-1s or Mig-21s with R-60s either. (An F-16 with 9Ls also shouldn’t be facing F-4Es, nor should it be facing R-77/PL-12 equipped Su-30s either)
The gameplay of air RB is stale and it drastically goes downhill above 12.0.
Copy/paste is way too prevalant, as is locking unique things behind events/paywalls

Also it’s great to see a decently made poll that talks about multiple aspects of the game.

Good points, I’ll make a poll about compression as well.
Thanks for the input!

Biggest problem I have with Gaijin is just how inconsistent they are. And some of this stuff CMM already covered thankfully

They talk about realism while in the same vein, will purposely gimp vehicles/weapons for balance. I understand this is a game, and some countries will be straight OP if you added their vehicles to the maximum effect. But in my mind, I believe in some cases, it’s better just not to add them in at all.

Gaijin’s flagrant disregard for documentation is wild when you will have some of the most meticulously sourced NATO documents and nothing is done to add them in. Meanwhile You can have a few Russian advertising brochures and the weapon gets added in lickity split.

Going by who has voted. practically 70% of the playerbase (At least, on the EN side) believes the game is biased towards Russia in some form or fashion, which shows how whacky it’s getting when you’re having NATO vehicles ran into the dirt.

What it tells me is that when you’re having to run field for a specific country so hard that you’re handicapping other countries left and right just to remain functional. People are going to start to notice.

Notice how back then (2015-2017) people were making big arguments of “Nuh uh, Russian Bias isn’t real” and now we’re basically getting it thrown in our faces by the utter disregard Gaijin has. It’s like they’re getting lazy.

The Senrai Maidens stuff I had no problem with if this was made by a company that actually cared about the product they were making (people can disagree with me on this.) “Ha ha Ivan, we’ll make some stuff for the weebs to show good will.”

But when you’re a company that is as shady as Gaijin it reads as phoned in.

Now that a competitor was mentioned. Gaijin already patent trapped the game’s control scheme with a vague patent basically saying “Erm actually. We invented PID controllers”

So if you want to make a copy, you’re going to have to make a different control scheme, or ask a lawyer to see if it’s possible to take the patent to court for being too vague.

This isn’t just “Gaijin is the only option.” they went out of their way to try and make sure they are the only option.

You hit the nail on the head on pretty much everything.

I didn’t even know Gaijin had a patent on flight controls, that’s very facking lame. It only seems to be for aircraft though, so a competing tank or naval game is still possible right?

Personal view, but this should probably be dependant on BR. Russia isn’t very good, just decent, for most BRs. Its 12.x where they become a problem imo (Kh-38 + LMUR + BMPT + Pantsir SM-SV). Russia overall is a great nation because they’re decent or good at most BRs, but “Russian Bias” only really exists in ground vehicles for me at 12.x.

I would place the br somewhat lower, but that’s mostly pretty fair, though there are some outliers like the Yak-9K or KV-8 imo

dude you can have mig-29 manuals and they will reject them lmao. they’re also inconsistent with russian stuff
it’s not just russian stuff they’re inconsistent with, they’re inconsistent with everythin

Maybe? it depends as the turrets on the tank would reuse the same code like what turreted aircraft use and if I recall they use PID controllers as well.

Could be? Doesn’t seem very hard to get around though, plenty of other games have done it very well.

Gaijin has stated this is due to an in-game limitation and they’ve gone back and forth multiple times trying to fix the aircraft. People have suggested raising the Oswald Efficiency number on the aircraft, but if they did that, it would rate way better than it actually had any right to.

The fact they actually tried means more than just pretending it didn’t exist.

For aircraft, I don’t know. Closest I know is WoP.

For tanks, maybe. But if you look at GHPC and WoT they likely use different systems, so you can be skirting the line close, but if you’re not doing it 1-to-1 you’ll be good.

I was talking more about data about the r-27 missile in the mig-29 manuals.
it’s just frustrating

Very interesting, and it’s easy to see you spent a lot of time doing this;

That being said, I would like to point out that Infantry DOES NOT detract resources from the vehicular aspect of the game nor is it detrimental to it in any way, as it’s a completely separate, additional developer team and department.

In the same light, I would like to point out that Gaijin has a net sales revenue of over a hundred and half million euros (150,000,000) every year, 70% of which goes straight into dividends, so, if they aren’t improving or fixing things, it is NOT a matter of a lack of resources, of all things.

BUMP ! This is really good, also great to see that many people share opinions.
