With dual pulse they don’t burn all the fuel up at low altitude and can glide up kind of high before the second pulse so it is more efficient in less draggy air
Also, the 40% claim for air launch isn’t even stated to be for max range where battery life would matter, I think this is intentional, so imo it is the more important statistic
Yes, I’m aware of that, but even with that it still would need insane kinematics to reach 40km. Take a look at Derby and Derby-ER. The MICA VL is 20km same as Derby.
Derby-ER VL is 40km and MICA NG VL is just a bit over 40km. Derby-ER in-game is modeled with a delta-v of 1,400m/s despite having great trajectory and dual-pulse.
In terms of comparing it with other missiles, the VL is the more important metric since that’s what Gaijin will model it after. The Derby and MICA missiles both are modeled after the VL metrics on live-server. Air launched max range is so dubious cause at what launch range and altitude is that 40% extra from?
With vertical launch you have the known speed, which is 0. You also have the known altitude which is 0.
I mean that’s a weird hill to die on because Gaijin will model it at 0 altitude when the VL numbers are out regardless if the documents doesn’t state zero altitude.
Fair enough, it’s just something to consider. Double VL range could be achieved with dual pulse optimization and a larger (but not 2x larger) motor I think
A flat 2x increase to MICA EM air launch range would be very inaccurate since 40% is your absolute best case scenario, which like I said probably isn’t even the max range one
Yeah, although the second burn will have more effect on a VL missile than air launched one tbh
First burn starts from 0m, 0 speed while it takes the energy of the fighter for the AAM.
On the second burn, the difference will be far smaller, because both VL and Air launched one will share a similar speed (most likely transonic) while the air launched one will have a small altitude advantage if the target did not defend by going low
I mean the usual place for missile tests and performance measures in France is usually Biscarosse, with a maximum altitude of - check notes - 75m
Obviously not 2x larger. It is quite a lot of motor though. Derby is almost the perfect example to look at, since the current MICA and Derby at 20km VL and MICA has slightly more delta-v than the Derby.
You can see the MICA NG in the future likely being 1,400+m/s delta-v and we could model it to compare to current missiles.
I must say I hate the new ARH FMs. My MICA now has “higher pull” which it didn’t need, and has significantly reduced range because the FM is bugged and won’t stop wibbly wobbly trajectories. Why even emphasize pull so much on BVR missiles? They gotta fix the trajectory shaping and following before they worry about how much of it missiles can do. I’m sure AMRAAM and R-77-1 users feel similar, even if their ranges are greater by a factor of 2 or so.
Pretty sure it’s max AoA is like 40°? I saw 80° once from a replay screenshot lol
This affects all missiles. Gaijin should limit all missiles by max AoA to realistic figures or figures based on logical observations (i.e., video proof of a missile’s max fin deflection), IMO
AIM-120D’s are notoriously harder to evade than previous if the launch aircraft is still looking at you, so no surprise there. You just got caught by the new buff is all
Because it’s both at the same time, everything pulls like a 9X but that also means things randomly wobble and spin themselves out sometimes. These missiles just feel very yucky.
Gaijin is infamously bad at finding middle grounds. This may be a case of either you get 9X pull with wobble or old AMRAAM pull and we will not find a middleground and instead revert the changes entirely.
