Thoughts on the new ARH flight models?

Whatever lets you sleep well.

i think everyone forgets that the 77-1 also has planer fin for stability and they are large, also the size of the grid fins on the 77 vs the small planar fins on the 120 might cancel out and make the advantage of grid fins negligible.

how, if anything it is more practical than some book

How exactly is it more practical?

It doesn’t really work like that.
The mid-body fins dont create much issues.
They are mostly there for generating lift.

The size argument doesn’t work either since the whole point of grid fins is that they are more efficient at supersonic speeds while planar fins generally suffer worse shocks at such speeds.

I’d say the diameter of the R-77 is probably more at play in terms of drag. Since it looks to be quite a bit bigger than an amraam.

I just hope they move those fox 3 slingers up in BR, it doesnt make sense to fight those stupidly strong fox3’s on a fox1 plane

its an actual technical report compared to a book written by a vympel engineer who would want to save face.

so those big fins dont cause issues, but the much smaller fins on the AIM-120D are somehow draggier than the much larger grid fins on the R-77-1 and its planar fins combined?

Ah yes, surely a paper from a country which legalised corruption (especially in its MIC) can be trusted.
Surely it wasn’t just to please the braindead generals so that they could lobby more contracts for an existing missile, without having to bother spending money for R&D to create a new one.

The mid fins dont move though.
And the grid fins have a lesser chord length than planar fins, which are more prone to stalling due to that.

Well, decompression is needed.
Or a 0.7 BR fork.
Good luck waiting that though, since gaijin cant be bothered to do either.

yeah, in fact i gave up on this game and rn and at most i will play with friends lol, this last update really messed up with my mood to play this type of game

mid body fins still contribute a large drag force, also yes grid fins are probably more efficient however that dose not mean size is irrelevant in terms of drag.

Are you really talking about corruption in a us source whilst using a SOVIET source as you own? Please.

They bleed waaaayyyy too much energy outside of Ranges IR Missiles Are For now

MICA being limited in range does not exactly come from it being TVC but from being 2/3rd the weight of other missiles from the same class (AMRAAM or R-77), same thing for R73

TVC is also usually integrated directly in the missiles exhaust or just behind it, so adds negligible drag or weight, if at all

iirc Grid Fins are largely only an issue if they specifically have to pass through the transonic part of the flight envelope, where the shock cone is both dragged out by them and bypasses them entirely so they can’t actually turn the missile. This is only an issue if you launch below mach one, but generally you want a dogfight weapon to be launchable below mach one.

i know, i never said anything about TVC.

I mean, you get the same range as a 190kg missile on a 112kg one, not too bad for something outdated.

MICA isn’t even the long range missile for planes that carry it these days.

And that still does not explain why TVC would be worse than gridfins at long range. In fact, the way one can look at it, both missiles can go the same range, but one with 2/3rd of the weight.

At least on AIM-120D (similar weight to R-77-1 although a bit lighter), they get more range to show for it

did they say MICA NG would be the same weight?

yes
