I feel like mustangs suffer cuz they are pretty mid. Their only bonus in ww2 was that they had a good range, which is useless in war thunder.

Well, they are also very fast and have very good energy retention.
Once they were up in the air they could just hit and run you all day long.
As a lone fighter the P-51 isn’t all that amazing for WT gameplay.
Can’t you just run away in American stuff? The few times I play propellor stuff usa is always catching me even at low altitude. Like sure that doesn’t guaranteed mean they’re good but if you’re cautious just cause an enemy has a big height advantage doesn’t mean you are guaranteed dead.
Only usa plane I’ve actually played is the p38k though so I can’t really speak. Felt like if the people I targeted dove then I couldn’t do much and would just die later because a random guy I never saw got to my altitude and I couldn’t do much. Guess I was helping my team by getting people to dive though. Unlike p51 I wasn’t able to outrun people to save myself
Fw 190s, Yaks, and Spitfires/Typhoon tend to outrun U.S. planes.

They easily outrun P-51Ds. The only U.S. planes that can outrun a decent portion of their competition is the P-51H-5, some specific Corsair models, and some specific P-47 models.

I am not aware if anything has changed in the last patch but he is not referring to some recent change. He has always believed what he says.
Fw 190 D-9 has been outrunning everything except high energy Corsairs and Thundersbolts for as long as I’ve had it.

Do note that these tests use MEC to push the plane to its absolute top speed without regard for thermals so certain planes in actual play will not get close to these listed speeds without burning out their engine.
There is another set of very useful info charts made by MOBB that does display AEC top speeds (in IAS) at multiple different altitudes so you can compare. Air RB - Performance Guide - User guide & Main Page

There is a bug affecting all planes with certain weapons, such as the m2_late which the p47 and p51s use, read this post for more detail.
