After looking a bit around the different barrels that could be used with the O-I, I’ve found something ratter interesting. In this WWII intelligence document, on every Japanese shells, this came up in the first pages:
I’ll just put a screenshot of the precise lines that caught my eyes.
This is from US intelligence about shells used by Japan forces.
It would be pretty fun to add on just a couple vehicle that could use it a “chemical” shell, maybe without any specific effects (we are not animals) that would just be named “Type XX chemical shell”.
It would just act as a smoke shell, maybe not getting as high, with a slighty different color. This smoke would kill open top, just like the flametrower or napalm, but a bit slower.
it would give some tanks, such as the Ho-Ri with it’s 100mm that don’t have any machine gun a way to deal easely against milk trucks or other open top, and give a larger use of the fire damage model.

Broski took a look at Warthunder and immidiately thought “you know what this clunky ass game that cant even model a penetrating hit properly at times absolutely needs? Poision tick damage” 😭
im in but i feel like theres definitely a german equivelant for the for the 1.0 howitzer
i cant say for 100% certain but i do believe some of the 150MM cannons for the artillery pieces in german tree can all use same ammo as the field gun versions and the field gun version could use chemical rounds but i cant find anything on it
I believe the M6A was also planned to make a chemical bombing
Called Operation PX / Operation Cherry Blossoms at Night. Would have been aimed at San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Tho it is more of a “disease bombing” than an actual chemical warhead.
Better fact:
Despite the unit 731’s status as a highly secure building, at least two unsuccessful escape attempts did occur.
The first attempt occurred between May and June 1943 and involved one of the prisoners knocking out an inattentive guard and stealing his keys. The prisoner then proceeded to open cell doors, freeing at least 100 prisoners. However, the prisoners remained confined to the inner courtyard of the prison building, from which they could not escape. Because the researchers did not want to kill the prisoners they were experimenting on, for fear of losing valuable research, they decided to flood the area with the pesticide chloropicrin which they believed to be a harmless tear gas. However, the chloropicrin proved to be fatal to the prisoners in the courtyard, all of whom suffocated.
Also, Italy used mustard gas in the second italo-ethiopian war.
So they didn’t fall behind by a mile.
Main aircraft used for this was the SM.81 pipistrello (already on the italian TT)
we also have the Ca.133 which also did questionable stuff on civilians.
Chemical warfare in WT would be napalm but better, since even a lot of closed tops tanks are not sealed and can let outside chemicals in (can’t wait for gas mask modification I guess).
So I suppose said clouds of chemicals would need to be fixed on 1 place and very visible if you want balance, since they would be absurdly powerful at denying areas at low to mid tier, past that and 90% of vehicles would be inmune. (also a lot of friendly fire)
Only upside over napalm is that kill time wouldn’t be instant and that in some cases you would need to fly really low, since they relied on spraying.
