The F14 needs to be buffed. It being a early 4gen fighter fighting against 4.5 gen

Agreed

If the aircraft didnt have aim7m it wouldnt change much imo its a terrible missile

the tws of f-14 and ALL PLANES need a rework

thats not the point the radars in overall had problem in tws

Tws is kind of the only thing that makes the Radar decent

The acm Radar has a range of 9km while everyone else pretty much has 19km or 20km
Also no hmd so you have to point the entire plane we’re you want to shoot

And basically any other flaw the Apg 59 from the F4 j/s has Besides range

Huge Notch window and completely blind Rear aspect
Sometimes still has Ground clutter even in pd mode

Bit of a necro, but no it’s not a realistic behavior. It’s less than what these systems are capable of, which is launching entirely from IRST, without the need for a prior radar track. All an ARH needs is a track file, which can be generated solely by an IRST if it has ranging capabilities, and I’ve even seen some good documentation that this can be done with TGPs with A2A modes.

Are there any sources for US RWR/ECM to be able to do same thing?

The F-14D’s IRST could give it Track Files: https://youtu.be/YJW5As4Os4U?si=woBJ7_AdcfdpvysI&t=6371

I said RWR/ECM suite (another form of passive detection), but thanks, the IRST thing is pretty cool

But this would launch it in IOG mode ,yea?

No, it would be either, a regular launch, or (Active) depending on Pulse, or Doppler ranging modes are selected whatever that actually entails, as to how that is different to Boresight mode(s), I don’t know.

And an IRSTS / EOTS track unsupported by the radar similarly provide (Active) mode functionality.

So how is it getting datalinked positional data while you’re in IRST?

Not specified, as far as I know.

I’d assume that updates to the predicted target position are likely transmitted by PD-ILL provided by the radar in Pulse Doppler mode, which is why that is identical to a regular STT launch.

Otherwise it waits to activate the seeker until it gets to the location specified prior to launch based off the information recovered from the IRSTS, and performs basic RCS /velocity analysis to select the correct target for terminal homing using the onboard seeker.

For the Typhoon, Rafale, and similar 4th/4.5th gen upgrade packages, it would still be a normal launch supported by datalink.

How does it give data over IRST?

The same way it gives data with radar, through the datalink antenna.

When firing at a TWS targets, the missile doesn’t “see” your radar target, only the information being fed it via the datalink.

Modern aircraft can build a track file from more sensors than just the radar and it will be fed all the same.

This radar locks onto chaff a lot too

yea

its the only pd radar in-game besides the apg59 based stuff that isnt true PD and still gets ground clutter and chaff i guess (there was a time were even good radars locked on to chaff but i guess its fixed for now)
