The Eternal Suffering of the Stock F-4J

In trying to grind for the f-14 prior to the release of the f/a-18, I was on the verge of unlocking the F-4J, which I was told would be a slog to grind, but ultimately was worth it once you unlocked the Sparrows. I am well over 30 deaths now, with only a handful of kills to my name, and not one was with its stock AIM-9D’s. At the BR it is now sitting at, with the addition of the premium F/A-18C (early), and with very high chance of a full uptier, the stock F-4J is nigh unplayable, as it gets annihilated by virtually everything. I cannot even unlock the extra AIM-9D’s to defend myself. With how Gaijin refuses to decompress the BR’s at high tier, I consistently face Spaded SU-33’s and Tomcats and am quickly pulverized before I can even dream of engaging in a fight. Am I perpetually doomed to never be able to upgrade this tub of wrought iron, or is there something critical I am missing here?

We need better stock modifications for every plane in this game; no need to keep that feature exclusive to rank 8.

If we consider the stock loadout of Rank 8 jets, maybe we should get a pair of AIM-7E-2 and AIM-9G in F-4J and British Phantoms.

In the current status, maybe you can do nothing but drop 2 BLU-1 to base. :/

That is also the reason why I can’t try F-4K/M even though I researched and bought them in UK TT.
it is nothing but a suicide option that fights against those shameless hornets with 2x AIM-9D.

I straight up skipped that thing and used other planes to grind the first f-18

Flew F-16A stock and it’s infinitely better than the slog that’s the F-4J. The AIM-9Ls actually make a difference. I’d recommend you stick to the F-4E and grind with that or if you got the F-16A use that. F-4J stock it basically a relegated ground target striker. What blows my mind too is that the AIM-9D is basically just an AIM-9B with a better motor. So you still got absolute dookie-tier early 60’s late 50’s seeker heads being used against modern jets

That’s not true at all though, it has 16-18g pull

The better pull is due to the motor. The motor burns slower and longer than the AIM-9B allowing it to pull harder and tighter, longer sustained thrust, and lower speeds allows more tight turns and so on. But it’s the same seeker-head. AIM-9B basically burns it’s motor almost as soon as it’s off the rails.

Categorically incorrect, the 9D’s seekerhead is quite the upgrade from the 9B.

As you can see on the spreadsheet below the Aim 9D has a lower guidance delay, smaller seeker FoV, is less likely to pick up flares, a better seeker gimbal limit, will only lock the sun when angled 10 degrees away instead of 20, has a higher lock range, and is able to deflect its fins more and faster than the 9B.

non sense. 9d is faster.

Stock grinds are abysmal on some vehicles.

I skipped phantoms as they are just awful

bad turn rate, bad missiles, just bad

the f-4j was my favorite aircraft back when f-14 was the top tier
it’s golden time is gone now.

dude i destroy them even in a harrier its just sad

This is valid criticism, all planes should get useful starting weapon systems.
But in my opinion the problem lies further down. First of all the awful BR, it needs further decompression urgently. F4E can see Early Hornets, F4J can see F15s and SU -33s and much more, that shouldn’t be the case.

Secondly the current mode is unsuited for those planes, we need Enduring Confrontation back for ARB, so that all planes have a chance and people can do different things. Patrol missions escorts, point capping etc. This would be such a breath of fresh air from the current awful 16 vs 16 FFA.

F-4J needs AIM95

Thankfully it has bomb options/rockets

If you meant P5 it’s export

No I didnt mean AIM-9P. AIM-95 agile was tested on F-4J.

F-4S is still good, and seeing as J lacks only the slats (which are imo useless for the playstyle naval Phantoms have…)

honestly F-4J kinda suffer but most Phantom suffer anyway, we need decompression

Not only.
USAF used the 9P variants as well , as low cost option in planes and units that are secondary.
For example , F-4C in ANG units could carry 9P variants, even all aspect ones. The F-4C retired from ANG by 1990 and there are photos with 9P variants.

The problem with F-4J is that navy didn’t use J/N/P Sidewinders in general.
I know that F-4J (UK) could carry 9Ls though…
Same with F-4S and F-4E (that can carry any 9P as well).
The thing is…i don’t know how many 4Js stayed in service and didn’t convert to F-4S , because by that time the Navy was replacing them with Tomcats as well.
But… if you can see what this one carries

In comparison with

which is probably a 9G.

Here as well.

stock it sucks but if you went for the bombs first like I did its not too bad
