well its kinda fair since the D cant take the A model AIM-54 since it is the best AIM-54 at 13.0 only the B can C+ and C are just to heavy
Well aim-26a was created using an aim-4E as basis because general lemay wanted a nuclear air to air missile, aim-26b was created because they couldn’t do testing and training with live nuclear warheads, and finally the aim-4F was created to update the 4E while the aim-26 was being delayed due to issues with the proxy fuse; the next logical step would have been to refine the aim-26b and to make an ir version of it, since missile reliability was going up and shooting one at a time was now starting to be seen as acceptable, but by that point macnamara had come into office and shut everything down.
Exporting the missile was simply something hughes was all too happy to do after the US airforce dropped the project.

There were projects like the F-14 ADC, ASF-14 and (A)ST-21, but none of them got anywhere afaik
Grumman really tried their hardest to keep the F-14 going
I guess a F-14A (late) would be the best option
Dunno what difference having another F-14 at 13.0 would make

Just look at the bomber improvements. They were survivable, and their way of lowering that because of complaints is to just make them catch on fire easily with no means to extinguish the vast majority of them. At which point we’re back where we started.

What makes the current F-14A the “early” version
It depends on how they did that / their IRL justification for it. Because I dont necessarily have issue with it if you can set fire to the fuel tanks with decent amount of punishment. Before a 40mm HE shell would still be sealed by the self-sealing fuel tanks
1 20mm round to the fuselage, and you cannot put it out. Or a half dozen 12.7mm rounds. It’s back to where it used to be except this time you’re stuck either in the match or J’ing out.
