The AIM-120 'AMRAAM' - History, Design, Performance & Discussion

MICA was on a single airframe in-game. And it became hard meta only after Rafale introduction because they both recieved buffs after buffs. But again, don’t let me stop you from downplaying AIM-120, I find such attempts rather entertaining

When Fox-3s were added the AIM-120 was far more oppressive than most other Fox-3s, since everyone was trying to BVR like a F-14, and not knowing how to defend aside from multipathing.

I would argue that the 120s held their superiority for a while, originally MICAs had very little range, and people considered the R-77 to be the worst Fox-3 due to the insane drag. Plus most things with AIM-120s simply had a better radar and FM than their R-77 wielding counterparts, and nobody was playing France for the M2K-5F aside from like 3 people.

However, now that the META of the game has shifted to close range ability I would agree the AMRAAM is at a major disadvantage compared to MICA/R-77/R-77-1.

Hell, most Pro Players prefer the South African Gripen since it has R-Darters, and those have super good close range performance compared to AMRAAM Gripens. But saying this back when Fox-3s were released would’ve been sacrilege.

Haha, I don’t understand why everyone wants to buff the AMRAAM’s maneuverability so much. Just look at the AAM-4. It’s not strong, is it?
Rather than that, go find some documents showing that the AMRAAM’s pitbull range should be made much shorter. If it gets the same seeker activation distance as the R-77 or PL-12, it will completely broken the game

I’m pretty sure the AAM-4 is underperforming, but that would be a question for someone like @Xeno_quaza.

Besides. The AAM-4 isn’t an AIM-120. It’s heavier, with a different motor and dimensions.

Afaik all Fox-3s aside AIM-54, MICA, and AIM-120D/PL-12A have the same Copy + Paste Seeker.

Aim120s when they were added were far more agile than they are now. They got a massive nerf in g pull a few months after they were added, that made them on of the worse top tier fox 3s.

Yes, it absolutely makes a difference!

If your opponent launches a missile from 16 km versus 20 km, which one is more effective?
Obviously, the 16 km launch is.

So if a missile starts triggering the target’s RWR at 16 km instead of 20 km, which one is stronger?

You guys: “They’re exactly the same!”

…Why??? 🤯

Gaijin made Western seekers weak, and flattened everything without even adding settings to compensate for it! Yeah. This cannot be overturned by turn performance! Because just turning won’t change the opponent’s evasion reaction time! If you only fight within 16km, maybe there is an advantage to increasing turn performance!

That was because the F-15C had no competition they could sit high and sling 120s.
That changes when Typhoon was added and the 120 was still hit or miss at best.
I would take 77-1 over 120s on Typhoon.

compared to overpowered 77-1 carriers

I want a cake and to eat it too aah comment.

You must accept it’s crazy that the 120 would be that inferior to the R-77-1.
Of course the US never upgraded a single thing.

Who said that US specifically upgraded maneuverability of the 120? Last time i checked BVR combat was the main focus of the modern airforce, so upgrading long range performance would be the goal. Besides, R-77-1 is fairly modern missile, isn’t it crazy to think that Russia wouldn’t make a competent missile for its airforce?

iirc it was exactly one month after they were added (checked to be sure a few days ago when replying to that troll)

I didn’t say it wasn’t but the fact that Russian upgrades are taken at face value without the need for a signed letter from the President. Meanwhile 120s need to have multiple sources to have a missile that still cannot compete with the R-77-1. We have the 120D in game now a missile essentially modernised for 2020.

It was nerfed on the Dev server, then they added the tracking delay on the live server

Between clipping the wings of the Aim120 to fit in weapons bays and cheaping out as much as they can on their modern fox 2 program by reusing old missiles and converting them, making the Aim 9X with is generally outclassed by its contemporaries, I thought it was pretty clear that the US focus was indeed BVR and taking advantage of being (one of) the only stealth jet operator at the time of most upgrades.

The problem is not the AIM120 maneuverability, it’s simply that notching and multipath render BVR weaker than it should be

Ah yes, because Su-30SM2 got its missing countermeasures, MiG-29M got its missing countermeasures, MiG-29KR got its missing R-27s, MiG-29M, MiG-29KR and Su-27SM got missing IRST features and laser guided weaponry. Then we will also not mention how gaijin were gaslighting MiG-29 with “flight model is correct” only to give it a buff recently, how gaijin and US mains gaslit people with “Su-27 is supposed to be a flying airbrake” only for it to be buffed, how gaijin said that adding R-77-1 will change nothing for Russian aircrafts. And people call me a troll.

Let’s not mention the eurofighter terrible BOL state I guess…

I’m not quite sure which in game mig29 you are referring to. In English, we don’t have the same names. Mainly MiG 29 (9-12) mig 29 (9-13) then MiG 29M (9-15) and MiG 29 SMT (9-19)

Just like all IRST, no ? It’s not Russian specific.
On the other side, I could mention how the Su30SM2 is the only jet capable of slaving it’s fox 3 through its HMS IRST, for some reason

Wasn’t that removed?

Thought the time where that was possible on Pirate and OLS ended a lot of months ago.

That was through the IRST in general. While I don’t have it, I’ve been told by some people that it’s still possible to do that on the SM2 specifically with its HMS
