The AIM-120 'AMRAAM' - History, Design, Performance & Discussion

Higher drag coefficient doesn’t necessarily equal extra drag; even gszabi’s sheet warns against this interpretation.

The A and C have relative advantages in drag at different phases of flight. While the AAM-4 has the same 1.55 CXK it has higher drag across all phases of flight. While the Fakour has a much lower CXK of 1.05 it has much higher drag than all the others.

Should also note that the C-5 is said to be WIP right now and values could change quickly. I’m not even sure if the current datamines are actually reflective of dev server values.

in case of AIM-120 it should be. since both AIM-120 has simillar diameter, length.

Yep, but they still can forget to do so, thats why report was created.

well, gszabi said on discord that it is up to date

Can’t use data mine, we need to wait for the devs to notice the issue. It is because the 120C5 was done when 120B first came, the 120B initially had a cD of 1.65 iirc, so the 1.6 of 120C5 represented the drag reduction, but they fixed 120B by dropping the drag to 1.425, but forgot to adjust the C5 too.

My question is when/if they will even notice it
As you said datamines cannot be used for this and we have no easy way of clearly seeing it aside from slightly lower range/speed than what is supposed to be there

Plus in my own testing of the dev server ive definitely found the 120C to be somewhat lacking for range
Currently if i fire both a 120B and 120C on a target at the same time the B always gets there quicker to the point where the C loses too much energy and stalls out before the B does

Im not experienced enough with bug reports though to compile that into my own report so perhaps someone else should do that

Assuming that the 120C will be anything other than a faster more lethal harder to notch Aim120B with added ability for close range (HOB) capability is misguided it is going to be great when it hits live or dev server 2.0

10% more total thrust output
10% less drag

More susceptible to speed/energy loss when manuvering.

It’s not a wonder weapon and the primary advantage it brings is the signficantly improved high offboresight/snap shot capability and improved seeker notch angles.

It only brings a minor improvement in range.

So
120C-5 got updated
now it is almost identical to R-77-1 with time-to-hit and velocity on impact. Su-30SM and F-15E headon.
Launched at same time ±

Spoiler

Closer to impact

Angle half sensitivity was changed from 7.5 to 15 though.

Bruh f15e was at 60000ft while su 30 at 49000ft
that doesn’t mean they have same performance the 120c5 was at 11k ft advantage but still can’t beat 77-1 at lower height

Quite a few things were changed now
Looking at the stats it gets a slightly lower AOA performance than the A/B now and everything else is copy paste except the drag and motor performance
So its basically the A/B with a better motor and thats it

Yeah c5 seems to be a very marginal improvement.

It’s unfortunate that they just copy and paste the seeker pretty lazy imo hopefully its still wip.

Yeah the biggest change i want from these missiles is just better seeker performance because range does not matter at all if you can defend against it as easily as you can currently
Id gladly trade the extra range for just a better seeker

not even, currently aim 120a/b hits before c5 at ranges up to 15-20km

the new 120c5 is no batter than aim-7,according to thelatest update, maybe we should do something?

Dev server isn’t over yet but, considering the c5 was supposed to be more maneuverable and it currently isn’t I’m a little worried how it’s going to end up when it comes to live.

The mobility nowadays is really bad. It’s just a broken wooden stick that rushes out to look for water when its bottom is on fire

The maneuvreability likely comes from the HOBS capability and higher average speed, rather than anything else.
