Tank discussion (light tanks vs. medium tanks, vs. heavy tanks)

I’m new to tanks and wanted to ask some questions/ discuss etc.

As far as I can tell, whereas heavy tanks and tank destroyers may not be the best options in a given battle, they seem to be the most “brain dead” so play a lot of the time. Whereas light tanks are running all over the map scouting stuff etc. heavies and TD’s are usually parked in one spot from where they either snipe/ or scan whatever is in front of them. Is this about about right or is it more complicated than that?

Light tanks on the other hand, are often chosen because many of them can scout. This provides useful info to your team and allows you to get some spawn point for an aircraft. My question about this is if the bugs regarding scouting have been fixed? As far as I can tell scouting has been bugged for ages.

Lastly, I wanted to start a poll but I can’t figure out how to do so, so I thought I’d ask… what type of tank do you guys prefer the most? Lights, Mediums, Heavies, or TD’s? I guess Self propelled guns are sort of their own thing as well however they seem pretty similar to tank destroyers a lot of the time to me.

So yea, I’m curious what the “meta” is nowadays and what people find the most straightforward and effective to play. Would be cool if we could talk about whether scouting is a reliable method of spawning planes also.

Thanks to anyone who can help… I’m mainly an air arcade player.

I have not encountered any outstanding bugs while playing my concept 3. There is a large cooldown if you scout a wreckage, but if I got my binos pointed straight at a tank it always pings. If I ping an already scouted tank, I dont get a long CD.

As for scouting and spawning planes - do not know. However, I’ve had a few matches at 4.7 where simply scouting tanks from a ratty position and letting your teammates shoot them gave so much score, I ended up at top 3 without firing a shell. Scout assists count as full assists for what it seems.

Thanks. I don’t think I knew… any of that info. haha. Do you prefer lights yourself?

I play british mediums/cruiser tanks.

My favourite tank has been the Avenger so far. Comet is fun as long as APDS works as expected.

Concept 3 has been fun enough, but wheeled vehicles’ lack of neutral traverse throws me off most of the time.

Mediums dominate. They are everywhere, while there’s a quite limited choice for heavy tanks. Some nations like Japan, China, Italy, Sweden lack heavies altogether (if you don’t count those 2 copy-paste IS-2 the chinese have) in their non-premium trees.
Furthermore there are some good heavies early on that indeed make a difference like B1 bis, Churchill I and KV-1 (L-11), but after these early ones the heavies become more easily killable with few exceptions (like the Jumbo, the Super Pershing and the IS-3). Assuming you’ll be playing Ground AB like me, there’s not much a heavy has over some good medium at the same BR. Likewise the light tanks don’t offer much over same BR range mediums.
So Mediums win. Not even bothering with TDs since most don’t have a turret. Yet generally they have the same advantages as heavy tanks are supposed to have - armor/survivability.

Tiger (At least in AB) is also exceptional when played well, and the Obj 279 is also… a thing.

IIRC I had a very good time in the Tiger H1 too, but from the perspective of facing them they don’t seem so menacing. At the same BR you get the Panther D medium and if you go just 0.3 higher you get the rest of the panthers. IMO the most troll-y german tank in the regular tree is the Panzer IV H (at least for the low or middle ranks).

As for the Obj 279, yeah that’s a true troll tank, but it’s not in the regular tree. The IS-7 is too, yet you very rarely see them nowadays (they used to be more common).
