T-84 Oplot during Strong Europe Tank Challenge 2018.

  • Basic Description:
    • The T-84U Oplot, also known officially as the BM Oplot zr. 1999, is a further modernization of the T-84 tank, which was developed from the T-80UD main battle tank. The Oplot can trace its lineage to the T-80UD, also known as the Object 478B. When Ukraine achieved its independence, the nation took stock of its equipment and realized that the Defense Industry had a strong dependence on Russia and other former Soviet-republics for supplies and components so in March of 1993, resolution No. 181-3 was passed to create a main battle tank that can be made utilizing Ukrainian components and supply chains. Development started using the T-80UD as a basis with the first prototypes of the project being unveiled in 1994 with its first international debut at IDEX-1995. Several projects were made, using the Object 478DU nomenclature for identification purposes, going from DU1 to DU9. Object 478DU9 was the latest (not including the Object 478DU10, or BM Oplot) version that went into serial production. This vehicle would be known as the T-84U Oplot.
    • The T-84U Oplot is an advanced main battle tank that is unrecognizable from its base, the T-80UD. The vehicle uses new types of protection/armor integration, a new engine, an active protection system, and more, with a focus on Ukrainian components. In terms of firepower, the T-84U Oplot uses a 125mm KBA-3 cannon which is a copy of the 125mm 2A46M-1 cannon developed in the Soviet Union. The gun is fed by a legacy autoloader that was found on the T-80UD. The vehicle can fire a wide variety of ammunitions from APFSDS-T to Gun Launched-Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (GL-ATGM) such as the indigenous ‘Kombat’, or older missiles such as the 9M119. The main service round for the Ukrainian military is the 3BM42, or the Ukrainian version of the round, the 3BM44U. Newer long-rod APFSDS-T rounds cannot be used with the vehicle due to the autoloader being unable to load it. A solution was developed to try and create a new series of rounds, the 3BM44U1 and 3BM44U2 APFSDS-T, but nothing is known to have came from the project. The vehicle also utilizes a coaxial KT-7.62mm machine gun and a KT-12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun. The T-84U Oplot also received new sights and improved fire control system to allow for accurate on the move targeting. The Gunner received an upgraded 1G46M day sight paired with a Buran-Katrin-E 2nd-generation thermal imager, also known as the Catherine-FC. The Commander utilizes a TKN-4S Passive-IR Periscope and the Driver can swap his main periscope for a TVN-5 Passive-IR Periscope.
    • For protection, the vehicle is equipped with next-generation dynamic protection, also known as Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA). This ERA, Nizh-1M, provides an increase in some areas of up to 20% more protection than the previous generation, Kontact-5. The Nizh-1M was designed to stop not only HEAT-shaped rounds, or chemical energy (CE) rounds, but also more modern kinetic energy (KE) based ammunition such as M829, DM33, and 3BM42 APFSDS-T rounds. On top of this, the vehicle is equipped with Varta, a soft-kill active protection system that is designed to interfere with laser-guided munitions. With Varta is a series of Laser Warning Receivers around the vehicle to allow the crew to deploy its twelve Smoke Grenade countermeasures.
    • The vehicle weighs around 48t and features a unique 1,200hp KMDB 6TD-2 6-cyl Diesel Engine paired with an automatic mechanical transmission that has 7-forward, and 5-reverse gears. This allows the Oplot to have an impressive speed of 72km/h forward, 32km/h in reverse, and a power-to-weight ratio of 25hp/t. This allows the Oplot to quickly relocate around the battlefield, especially in conditions that are unsustainable. An Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) was also installed.
    • Officially, the vehicle is known as the BM Oplot zr. 1999, removing its prior nomenclature of T-84U Oplot. Currently there are six T-84 Oplot’s in service with the armed forces of Ukraine, with a total of ten being accepted into service in 2000. Due to financial constraints, four were stripped down to the T-80UD standard to prevent loss of state secrets and were exported to the United States for analysis and training. A further development of the vehicle was completed and was known as Object 478DU10, or the BM Oplot.
    • At least one T-84 Oplot has taken part in combat during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

  • In-game :
    • Estimated Battle Rating: 11.0
    • The T-84 Oplot offers similar performance to the already in-game T-90A in the U.S.S.R. with the main exception is maneuverability, being able to move at high speeds and reverse up to 32km/h allowing it to quickly escape out of overwhelming situations. While sharing many capabilities, the T-84U Oplot is superior in all qualities with the exception of the rounds fired. The Ukrainian military still uses the 3BM42 APFSDS-T round and does not have access to the 3BM46 APFSDS-T round or anything indigenous to it, however it is capable of firing the Kombat GL-ATGM, and still retains the ability to “duel” many other tanks comparable to its estimated Battle rating. One factor that can be changed is the inclusion of the Slovakian TAPNA APFSDS-T round that would allow it to easily compete with vehicles at top rank.

These mudflaps on the ERA could be a modification maybe

+1 for russia after t80bvm sadly its still limited to only 3bm42 as the gun is unable to fire anything more modern

nah its gonna be in the thai sub-tree for japan

makes more sense after bvm but with worse ammo

They could give it the rounds that were designed for it as a way of increasing its BR. Gaijin has used ammo as a balancing factor. The 3BM44U-series has more pen reportedly but not much is known and it’s not manufactured and remained in testing as far as I know.

it never went into testing it was abandoned

Do we have further open sources on this? I know it was abandoned but it was also a state secret during the time of program inception so is there an open source breakdown of the program?

if you ask ukrainians you will most likely get it i only know that it got abandoned

I’ll keep searching around, I haven’t had luck.

It’s really up to Gaijin, at this point I don’t think it would be an issue to give it the shell it was designed to use, even if it was abandoned, as long as there is enough basic information for it.

The gun can fire modern rounds it’s just that they don’t have any

No oplot is not able to shoot anything more modern than 3bm42

+1 One should sit in Soviet Tech Tree (Obviously as Ukraine was part of Ussr) and as thai vehicle in Japan. Perhaps a T80ud for china through pakistan.

Welp, looks like the first Thai vehicle is going to Japan, it might only be a matter of time when the Thai sub-tree gets added

Close, it will be pretty much this one but I agree:

Theres already a thai one

Oh word. I didn’t even see it. That’s legit

I’m curious if Pakistan can get the T84, they also tested the T84 as a competitor to the VT4, if Sweden has the ability to get the tested T80U then can Pakistan get the T84 as well?

Maybe we’ll add Palestine to Israel right away, idea first what you write, not talk nonsense.
