The T-80UM-1 Bars is an experimental modernization of the T-80U, developed in Russia as an effort to significantly improve battlefield survivability against modern anti-tank threats. One of the most notable features of the T-80UM-1 is the integration of the Arena Active Protection System (APS). Importantly, the T-80UM-1 retains the same 125 mm smoothbore gun and ammunition types as the T-80U. This means it can utilize the full range of standard Soviet and Russian munitions, including APFSDS, HEAT, HE-FRAG, and gun-launched ATGMs. As a result, its firepower remains fully consistent with the base T-80U platform, ensuring no compromise in offensive capability while focusing on defensive improvements.
Like other T-80 variants, the T-80UM-1 is powered by a gas turbine engine, providing excellent acceleration and mobility compared to diesel-powered counterparts. This allows for rapid maneuvering, which is crucial for both offensive operations and evasive actions.
Despite its technological advancements, the T-80UM-1 did not enter mass production and remained a prototype or limited demonstration vehicle.
