Sukhoi Su-57 Felon - Technical details, Analysis and Discussion

that isnt going to increase detection range, only coverage

side arrays dont even use L band iirc, only a relatively small leading edge antenna which is only good for IFF and some EW

360° radar and IRST coverage

believe me, the NEZ of even the most modern missiles isnt actually that large, anyone who believes in claims of that PL15s on the rafale at 160–180 km, or the r37 hitting a mig29 at 184 km, should closely examine the conditions surrounding those engagements, they will notice a parallel between the Iranian f14 kills and a specific US Navy incident where a phoenix hit 3 aircrafts flying in formation, in all these cases, success required extremely ingenious strategies combined with serious errors on the part of the targets, or some serious technological limitation, something like that

you could go from 16 to 45km range against F-22/35 frontally if claim about 0.1m^2 detected at 90km is true for Byelka. which is doable in game with the reworked AIM-120

you are underestimating the flexibility of su57s radar bands as well as the L band

The planar style array of the Byelka is actually worse for wideband performance than the flared notch arrays of American fighter AESA’s

L band is not magic either

I never said it was, but its enough to fight with a raptor

The issue is the leading edge array is quite small and limited in capability, it won’t really make a difference since it’s meant for IFF and some EW primarily, and lacks the size and power to be very useful.

It will also be very inaccurate due to its small antenna size

this is something I used to think back when I viewed the side radar as a fire control radar, but it doesn’t need to be precise to be useful, It just needs to pick up a resonance off the f22 at, say, 100, 90, 80 kms, that’s already more than enough to attack or defend using the main radar or even from other sensors

they are not uncoated, they use some sort of coating but idk which

Flying this thing in War Thunder is my ultimate dream.

Just hoping gaijin doesn’t butcher it like the Mig-29

It still carries a penalty due to its shape

The side arrays are X band iirc, only the very small leading edge array is L band

we also have to consider here that the incoming enemy emission is unknown in terms of its properties. This will give a significantly worse signal to noise ratio compared to ones own emission.

Its gonna be like finding a needle in a haystack vs finding moldy blade of hay in a haystack

This is not to mention all the LPI and EMCOM strategies

at the end of the day the signal of an X band FCR is not going to be completely different from others. signal strength matters, modern electronics can quickly distinguish what is an enemy radar from noise.

which the US is very familiar with as one of the earliest developers of LPI technology for AESA, and would naturally have similar experience developing ways to make RWR more effective against it.

Yes signal strength matters, but that factor is also directly subject to LPI

LPI isnt a specific algorithm or a method, it is a OUTCOME which can be achieved in multiple ways. Just because USA used a specific method doesnt mean russia uses the same.

ESM irl is more of a game of cat and mouse, which is updated whenever you get info on the enemy radar emission. Thats why ELINT exists as a whole, Some jets like grippen have a dedicated switch to switch to wartime mode which changes their emissions entirely

Even if the opposition side figures out their emissions and all, the creators of the radar suite can simply update the algortihms

idk how gaijin will implement it in game…

fundamentals of what is used to achieve LPI are largely similar though, and i doubt designers did not think of this when developing modern RWR.

even if russian LPI did remain effective and reduced RWR detection range, the passive vs active range is still in favor of the F-22/35 since they have stealth which significantly reduces the range at which a Su-57 could see an F-22 or F-35

Well no doubt the f22/f35 will be able to detect first, the su57 will have to adapt its own ways to counter that, its just that the difference in distance may not be as large as people think.

This also will be largely mitigated if gaijin ever models networked warfare… goes for both side

honestly with nuclear escalation, there is a slight chance we might finally see the end of cqc

But this goes only if we ever get maps in which AAs dont make the safe combat zone thinner than chile

taking out the “frontline” SAMs isnt that hard

idk man but them having 100% interception rates is frying me

though i mostly play 12.3 not top tier

plus theres a stupid lot amount of them, that the match will end before you even get to kill half of them
