Because the ZSh-7A, the white helmet doesn’t have a built-in head mounted display as other more modern helmets—It’s a Soviet-made helmet afterall. It relies on the Shchel-3UM to have a functional head mounted display. As others 5th generation airplanes, the Su-57 fleet will have a exclusive helmet with integrated head mounted display:
In many videos regarding the su-57 I have yet to see the HMD being deployed but I suppose they could be used only for specific combat operations. But if there’s pictures or videos of HMDs deployed I’ll quickly correct my stance.
Schel-3UM isn’t used anymore iirc, it was replased with Sura and NSTS-T. But in general Russian pilots don’t bother with installing it on their helmets. One of the Su-35 pilots said that you don’t really need it in modern combat, and tall box ACM is more than enough 95% of time when WVR combat is taken into consideration.
Ive gotten lost in this confusion too, nobody knows what the hell engine they want to equip the Su-57 with. Ahhhhh ive heard enough put an RD-33 in it.
