what radar was it originally planned to have?

When the Flanker was being made the N001 was supposed to be a PESA, but they ended up putting a Casegrain seeker on instead.

Sukhoi’s Su-27 Flanker Russia’s primary fighter.

“NIIP had developed and produced the first electronically scanned radar, named the Zaslon, for the MiG-31. However, development of the new radar for the Su-27 failed, because it was too heavy for a fighter. In 1982, the electronic scanning capability was abandoned and the new N001 radar, unified with the N019 radar developed at the time by the rival Phazotron-NIIR institute based in Moscow, was ordered for the Su-27.”

If I had a better source on hand I would send it. Maybe ask @kizvy, he most likely has more authentic sources than I do.

world if NIIP had managed to finish the PESA instead of letting NIIR drop that shitty casegrain trashbin in the nose

They did ffinish the PESA, it just showed atrocious results during testing, worse than even cassergain.

no the issue wasnt that the PESA was bad

the issue was that the exact specs (like waveforms and frequencies) were leaked to the US and thuse the PESA couldnt be used

That’s two new ones I’ve heard.

The other things I’ve heard about why the Su-27 never got PESA is that

  1. The PESA dish wasn’t finished in time
  2. The PESA was too heavy

but my story is actually true

thats why they rushed with upgrading the Mig-31 and Mig-25

they exchanged the radars so that the info the US got was outdated

the 27KUB looks awfully sad, i hope we get it in game so i can hear people flame it for no reason.

So, by your logic PESA on MiG-31 could be modified to circumvent the leak, but PESA on N001 should be scrapped and replaced with Cassergain?

because the mig31 was already in service at that time and they didnt had enough time to make a completly new PESA for the Mig29 and Su-27 from scratch

for the Mig29 and Su27 the caisegrains were probably good enough because both heavily relied on GCSI / DL

and those 3 arent the only radar systems that got leaked

so Phazatron had to develop 4 or 5 new radars to combat the leak, in a short as possible timeframe
ofc the radars of the 2 platforms that didnt had to rely on them, because of the doctrine, would get the short end of the stick

got the whole gang here

There is a bit of a problem, however. PESA for N001 was dropped in 1983. Tolkachev was caught in 1985.

he worked for the CIA from 1979 to 1985

it is entirely possible that the radar with the designation N001 was supposed to be a pesa but mid way through the development they had to scrap it

and it is also possible that they knew that it was leaked but didnt imediately knew who leaked it

You are just assuming at this point. Fact is - PESA dish for N001 was dropped before this whole situation. And MiG-31B with modified Zaslon entered service only in 1990-1991.

and you arent making assumptions?

it is a fact that the radar specs of the mig29 and su27 got leaked to the US

do you have anything to show for this statment tho
