Submarines - WT Discussion

From playing both April fools events, i can say i’m excited for the introduction of Submarines, i cannot wait for them to come to the game

Personally, I’d prefer something closer to the dotmod for cold waters, but multiplayer in the case of war thunder. Vessels would have to contend with things like thermoclines, active and passive sonar, ambient noise, baffles, how explosions and sinking ships can disrupt sensors. A submarine doing everything correctly should be able to remain undetected.

Yeah same!

Yeah I think that could work

What do you all think, will submarine be added to the Bluewater fleet or the coastal fleet? Or will they get a separate tab like helicopters?

imo the most likely implementation is having their own tab. If subs are added to one of the existing tabs, though, the more likely one seems to be the Coastal fleet - the gameplay capabilities of submarines are more similar to the vehicles already present there, and most vehicles w/ antisubmarine weapons are there too.

Ah yeah, that makes sense

It depends. If we’re basing it on displacement then it would be coastal, but alot of submarines were ocean going boats like the T clas, gato class, or type XXI so bluewater.

That’s true as well

I think they would be added to coastal and most likely around 3.3-4.0 range since they are not really ships per say. Also if they have any chance of survival and being useful they would need to spawn in the middle most protected area of the map.

Yeah that makes sense as well

I dont play navy but can you kill a battle ship with one single lucky shot to the magazine?

Or any single shot like tanks in GRB?

With a torpedo that has enough amount of explosive - sure, almost every hit near the magazine will end up with detonation.

With shells it is more tricky. Of course you can still one shot even with a single shell, but with the amount of angles and layers of armor there is plenty of rng and luck. Shell can easily deflect of one layer, get absorbed by another or explode too far from the magazine to detonate it.

So it far less consistant than it is in tanks.

The Japanese Long Lance torpedo’s are amazing, in my experience, I’ve even one shouted a Scharnhorst with it once or twice. And as @NOM1337AD said, (near) magazine hits are one hit kills often as well.

I managed to detonate a mutsu the other day by firing a torpedo from brave borderer into the magazine. It’s entirely possible with the direct impact torpedo’s we have in game. With magnetic piston torpedo’s it’s probably even more effective because they detonate under the hull of a ship.

That must’ve been epic

Oh it was. Granted it was a lucky shot and I still had to get in position because naval EC but yeah. Honestly, torpedo’s are far more fun than guns.

Does make me slightly wonder though, how would gaijin go about subs that could carry different kinds of torpedo’s. Would you have to select each tube individually choosing between torpedo’s depending on their explosive mass, their way of propulsion, and in the case of modern torpedo’s, their modes of homing. And what about MOSS decoys that are launched through the submarine tubes?

Personally I’d go for individual loading and switching between reloadable tubes like you do with main guns on a surface vessel but I’d like to hear alternatives.

It could be something like this menu in the Silent Hunter games:

You could have different types of torpedoes in there, and when you fired a torpedo, the crew would basically load the next fish in line.
I think it could work similarly to the missile and bomb menu on modern airplanes

Perhaps.

I did some more thinking and perhaps it would be smart to have a pair of buttons dedicated to cycling back and forth through the tubes? As well as having them selectable through the multi-function menu
