Im happy to see this topic is alive and well keeping it on the forefront. Its important to discuss this and ive read it from top to bottom, seeing the what could be, what could happen and may happen. Im a huge fan of our Naval and Sub games like Silent Hunter, so to see submarines possibly coming in game is really exciting to me!! But my response for the Nay sayer is do you know theres people still upset today because Gaijin “ruined Naval by having costal and blue water in the same game with two separate trees”? Yeah I know, its obviously not ruined 🙄 Also to add that for every Goliath there must be a david. In todays Naval as it is played Battleships starting at 6.7 have really nothing to fear on the water. They can sit in the deep waters and over power or fend off nearly anything that gets close to them. For this very reason alone Submarines are needed as they would be the “David” in this scenario. I also believe that subs placed in the game in a realistic way, or really the way of battle of the Atlantic would not really be a huge threat to anyone, but would bring lots of new players into the game.
The Pr.11451 on the devserver has it 's dipping sonar " Zvezda M1-01 " modelled as a module, and it 's visible in the Xray. Currently lacking a description text and functionality:
Sonar devices have not previously been represented w/ modules; the appearance of the sonar in this boat may hint at how counter-submarine gameplay may be intended to be introduced.
Just trying to think how that works because dipping sonars are normally lowered by helicopters, and active sonars are normally in the bow of a ship. A towed array is normally in the stern and looks a bit like a long large wire with microphones in.
So why is a towable sonar being lowered from the middle?
Completely off Sonar topic, but anyone else noticed that they gave depth charges and mortars explosion models? Before once deployed it was just a red indicator that went in the water with nothing following on, now it actually desturbs the water surface much like a actual explosion.
Since it 's a dipping sonar, my assumption( supported by no sources ) is that it 's not intended to be lowered while the vessel is in motion.
The hydrofoil being as fast as it is would probably allow it to move to the general area of a suspected submarine contact much faster than a submarine could leave, then direct a more substantially armed, but slower or less sensor-equipped large ASW vessel to make an attack.
Though it still has guns for self-defence against similarly-sized ships or aircraft, and the acoustic torpedoes for if a discovered submarine is close enough for them.
Guess that makes sense if you want to listen below the thermocline although I can see why it didn’t catch on. If you detect a submarine, you probably don’t want to be a sitting duck waiting to reel your sonar back in
