Subject: Regarding the Current State of US Top-Tier Air and the AIM-120 AMRAAM

Dear War Thunder Development Team,

I am writing to provide feedback on the current meta of top-tier Air RB and the performance of US aircraft and their primary weapon, the AIM-120 AMRAAM.

The nerf to the AIM-120 series at the end of 2024 was understandable at the time. The environment was different, lacking powerhouses like the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and advanced missiles like the R-77-1. F-15Cs and F-16Cs were dominating the battlefield. However, the landscape has drastically changed. US jets like the F-15C and F-16C (excluding the more capable F-15E/I) no longer hold a clear advantage. In this new era, the AIM-120’s performance has become inconsistent, often feeling like a “lottery ticket” rather than a reliable weapon.

Its weak off-boresight capability at close range is now a critical disadvantage. While a Typhoon can use its insane flight performance to brute-force a firing solution, most other aircraft simply cannot. This puts many US jets at a severe disadvantage in the dynamic, close-range fights that often decide matches.

We saw a glimpse of a better state during the “Leviathan” dev server, where the AIM-120C-5 performed notably well. It was responsive and effective. However, by the second dev server, it was reverted to its current underwhelming state. It is public knowledge that the real-world AIM-120C-5 received significant improvements through the P³I program, including a better seeker and new flight control software, which should grant it superior maneuverability. In-game, however, it feels merely like a slightly longer-burning, less draggy version of its predecessors, lacking the “snap” and agility it historically possessed.

With the upcoming addition of a “new” F-15C featuring an AESA radar, there is a concern. If it carries the same underperforming AIM-120s and has the same flight model as the existing F-15C, what justifies its place at 14.3? An advanced radar is of limited value if the missiles cannot capitalize on its capabilities.

I, and many in the community, are not asking for the AIM-120 to be restored to its previously overpowered state. The initial performance of the AIM-120A/B was indeed over-tuned, and their adjustment was necessary. However, we urge you to bring the AIM-120 series, particularly the C-5 variant, to a historically accurate and competitively viable level . Please consider implementing the improved seeker and flight control logic from the P³I program to give it the performance it deserves.

Thank you for your continuous work and for listening to community feedback. We appreciate the effort you’ve put into evolving War Thunder’s gameplay over the years.

Sincerely,
A dedicated War Thunder player.

The Aim-120C-5s would be fine to be added in the dev server state with a better seeker if proper decompression of 120C-5 carriers was done. What should happen is that the Rafale, and Typhoons should move up to 14.7, and the F-15E/Golden Eagle should move to 14.3 with more accurate Aim-120Cs.

I think this is the most important change they could do, and it would give 120s an even greater edge than they already have at range.

I honestly don’t see how it will be any better than the F-15E, and it seems like it will be sad at 14.3. The new Israeli F-16 also suffers from a similar overtiering issue.

Rafale was added at the same time.
R-77-1 is just an R-77 with a slightly better motor, and better lofting characteristics.

AIM-120C5 is a competitive missile with good agility despite dual plane movement not being a feature of War Thunder.

@Demokrat4
F-15C GE has an improved radar.
It can’t get more missiles as proven thus far, despite our efforts trying to find evidence.
Armor makes no sense.

r77-1 has a much better motor than the r77. it produces more thrust and burns longer. also for some unknown reason the -1 gets less drag despite having the same body.

C-5 is not competitive with current ARB. And this is due to its terrible HOB performance, it wastes all of its energy trying to turn but cant due to its unreasonably low fin AOA. You can put any other missile in the same scenario as the C-5 and they all are far more likely to score a kill. and then you have the magical R77-1 which has just about the same range BUT it can pull 30-40 G’s 2 seconds after coming off the rail, the amraam in general wont do that until 6 seconds of burn time. Its just unrealistic and has a very unfair advantage for Ru, Cn and the french with thier busted mica missile.

also there are images of f15’s having 4 missiles per wings, and again another 4 per station placed near the engines

The R-77-1 burns for 1 second longer producing 5 - 10% more delta-velocity.
They have the same drag as well.

Those F-15s with 16 missiles are mock-ups according to Boeing.

Half of our game consists of mock-ups. There are mock-ups airplanes.

The mock-ups and paper vehicles have been delisted when replaced.
Prototypes are not mockups.
And if you want a prototype F-15, more power to you to suggest it; however, it will not be the F-15s we already have.
