Only munitions is what is coming on you and even using it like that if there is spam of missiles etc etc even that screen is overwhelmed in real game
i always try to place 1 launcher on a cap if i can, and shoot munitions down with that, do note that you also have a ammo box.
It just occurred to me that the BUK is the only SPAA there you have a search/ tracking radar on a separate vehicle to the main search radar, I just did a quick test and it seem like the launcher radars scanning conflicts with the TEL radar, especially when they are turning towards a new target, not only do they bounce the tracking box all over the place, if something else happens to fly through their search area they seem to fight with the TEL over which target to track.
Yeah, they should make the TELAR radar the priority radar, that way it will be better

You need to keep main radar shut.
- Place launchers
- Shut down main radar.
- Go in launcher
- DONT USE BUTTON / KEYBIND on Radar ON / OFF. If you use it, it will automatically refire main radar, instead use binding for switch beetween radar / irst , and it will only fire launchers radar.
You can see if it worked when returning on main vehicle and look that radar is folded down. And in launcher you got about 90" angle of scan
Or one easy option is to place launchers and drive that useless main radar towards enemy and let them shoot it out for you :D
Or in testdrive just do this
the buk only sucks compared to the IRIST (which also sucks in its own way, it can’t intercept ordnance reliably and also can’t hit helis bc of the LDIRCM magic fields) and to the Pantsir and maybe NASAMS if that’s your ballpark although they also aren’t great. The buk certainly is one of the better SPAAs compared to all the alternatives (Spyder should be 12.0, Type 03 should be 12.0-12.3, HQ… let’s just say 8 non TVC missiles that are ARH, which btw is the main downfall of all hightier SPAAs, that ARH seekers in regards of multipathing severely underperform while helis also give 0 radar return). In the end the buk is on the upper end of SPAAs and the main issue isn’t the buk itself it’s the game mechanics around it that are the issue
The buk sucks compared to the nasams, irist, hq 11 and sampt. also do you think arh missiles can hit hovering helicopters that are deploying chaff? spyder sucks, but is getting a major buff type 03 and buk are on the same level, and the hq 11 is amazing, only lacks in ammo count. All you saidi s: well the buk is not bad, it’s just arh that is bad
I’ll grant you nasams and irist but the HQ11 is worse (its only upside being that it is smaller) but it has way less and worse missiles, the sampt is a bit of a weird case so i leave that one out, you forgot the useless British one btw which again is worse than the Buk.
Helis don’t need chaff to avoid ARHs, why do you think most people only run flares? just weave slightly left or right and it misses.
wont do anything for it, P5s still fall out of the Air after like 8kms, the radar still isn’t properly modeled and in the end it is just another ARH missile which granted will be slightly more interesting due to dual pulse but nonetheless still is an ARH.

this is a fact yes, i can use the buk without major issues all that while ARHs are massively gimped. The solution to the buk “suffering” isn’t adding another broken russian SPAA without any competition, it is to fix ARHs at toptier (giving Heli blades a proper radar return alongside reducing multipath height to a realistic 2-5m) and viola every nation suddenly has a more or less competent AA that can do more than just intercept munitions.
The problem in war thunder is that players think that all SAMs can be used equally. The BUK is an amazing SAM but only when accompanied by a Pasntir. The air defence needs to layered, with the BUK shooting at planes with its ARH missiles and the Panstir intercepting munitions ( as the use case in real life).

You can use slow main radar to see direction of enemy, then point launchers towards that direction. They have radars with much better scan rate but narrow fov.
Also you should set radar screen size to 40km, you can see and engage enemies from 20-25km ranges.
The whole point is to be able to intercept munitions with arh missiles (which ir missiles sometimes fail with) and keep enemy pinned down to 0-60m altitude and in 3-9 so they cant engage targets. And if they dont engage targets, they become useless which is good for your team.
There is munition you should never bother intercepting. Gnss bombs. If your radar gets cluttered by sudden 16-20 bombs launched without line of sight you should run immediately. Most likely its gnss bombs which cant track moving targets but are good at erasing stationary spaa especially at spawn. Strike eagle can carry 20 of them + 6 ir mavs which makes it pretty good for supressing enemy air defense runs if map is good enough (maps like poland for example are infinite 3-9 simulator)

or prioritize the radar of which ever vehicle you are controlling

Pretty much. That’s why the 2S38 is very useful at top-tier with its HE-VT. Get the full mix of Buk, Pantsir, HE-VT slingers.

Also, non-USSR vehicles are crap and it’s surely not his own skill issue to have bad stats in them.
Don’t use the main radar vehicle… use the auxiliary vehicle. The main radar vehicle radar have a slower refresh rate than the Auxiliary vehicle. I can agree with you about the fact it always rainning ATGM in the sky and people just multipathing or notching the missile effortlessly. Buk is more for huge wide-open map instead of tiny cramped city maps.
