So them “dropping on you” in your top tier air superiority fighter, and beating you… is a pilot issue.

Because you’ve got to try and stay out of their HMS WEZ arc or you get an unflarable R73 / 27ET shoved up your exhaust.
I’m not even talking just about the Su-34, the Su-27SM and MiG-29SMT both do this well with HMD

This isn’t true and you know it, within like 1.5-2km, R73 launch is a death sentence.

I USE the R73 so I would know that the damn thing is flare hungry as hell, and in GRB unlike the 9M you can at least SEE that thing coming at you.

Speaking of preflaring, you can do that if you expect a 9M and it’ll go straight for it in a headon

I use both too, and I’d take a R73 over a 9M all day, everyday.

Honestly in GRB I would take the 9M, but in this scenario the R-73 is extremely deadly too

If you fly towards a Jas-39, f-16, f-15 or a myriad of other RWR pings with potential 9Ms then it’s always safe to pop a few flares until a merge or you kill them first, especially in sim

Sounds like they’re mixing Desert Storm with the USAF’s issues dealing with radar sites in Kosovo. The Serbs pretty quickly figured out that turning off the radar to defeat the US’s HARMs worked really well. Cue the RAF with ALARM which delt with them pretty handedly due to lotiering through the radar turn off.

You try to keep it on the deck? You better be preflaring because a R-73 or R-27ET is coming your way
tbf that was russian doctrine and was used to somewhat good effect in a lot on combat scenarios, the ALARM is a truly amazing piece of engineering though lol

I think R73 shines even more in GRB.
HMS + R73 is a clutch combo in the 1v1, something you hardly ever experience in air battles, but very often do in ground.

You know what the issue with your scenario is?
What sequence of events went wrong for my top tier jet to end up in a situation where I am faced with either
1 - Vertical climb an SM3/Su-34/Su-27SM/Mig-29SMT
or
2 - Pull away and get dived down on (which is only a serious threat for the latter 2 jets)
That scenario assumes I completely ran out of A2A missiles, I’m in a gun only engagement, and that I mispositioned myself horribly
because if I do have missiles the answer is obviously… fire my missile, and depending on the range he has little to NO time to break it off.
Or pull back because most of the top tier jets in the game can easily get a better angle of attack on the only 4 jets top tier russia can muster.
