Spectating question

I keep logging in to a message that more than 10 players have complained about me. I know this stems from me spectating in naval matches.

I play mostly naval, and I do not make a secret of the fact that I like to spectate some matches. I might see players I enjoy watching or new ships I do t have yet or maybe I just want to relax and watch a match.

I tell people I’m spectating, so they do not think I’m a bot or afk. I wish them luck in the match and communicate sometimes during the match.

I know I’m not going to get banned for this behavior, but the warnings are an annoyance, and that’s on top of the abuse I get from some players.

My question is, is it somehow against the TOS in spectate matches given the fact that the functionality to do so is built into the game?

Isn’t it being afk? You don’t actively play the game ( or battle for that matter), no?

I’ve had warnings for the same type of things the most annoying being passive gameplay. I’m not superstar, but I’m also not a lemming who just blindly charges forward to the same point over and over just to die the same way.

I don’t know what the big deal is with spectating? I do it all the time at the beginning of a match as I want to know where my team in Ground RB are moving to.

So, you’re not actually playing anything and then spectating after you are sunk, you’re just spectating right off the rip for the whole match?

Honestly not surprised people are complaining, you’re basically leaving the team a man down every match you do this lol.

Does watching games on YT / Twitch etc not interest you? Just feels like there are better avenues for this type of… idk… ‘consumption’ of WT matches.

No, I watch the whole match. I enjoy watching live matches where I can interact with people rather than watching replays. I guess my confusion comes from the fact that the spectate function is there from the beginning of the match, but if I use it, it makes people angry. I think they should remove it if I shouldn’t be using it.

I’m not AFK though. I’m watching without a actively participating. I still talk to the team (when people actually use chat). I haven’t found any TOS covering it and do t understand why it exists if I’m not supposed to use it.

I dunno either about the tos, but i understand why people dislike you because of it

Stop playing semantics. True, you’re not technically Away From your Keyboard while spectating in this manner, but for all intents and purposes you are since you’re doing absolutely nothing to help your team. In fact, you’re actively working against your team by behaving like that. You might as well be AFK for all the help you’re not providing. There’s a huge difference between spectating after your last death and this passive might-as-well-be-AFK spectating.

I’d report you, too. In a heartbeat. Just because the game permits you to do so does not mean there won’t be consequences. Either stop doing it, or learn to deal with said consequences.

Streaming things like Twitch were invented for this purpose.

Ok. No need to be so angry about it. Since I can’t be banned (I’ve gotten this message hundreds of times) I guess I’ll just keep doing it and deal with the messages when I log in.

Are you familiar with this page?

https://warthunder.com/en/tournament/replay

You can download and spectate matches, whether randomly (simply filter for naval) or for a specific player and/or map and/or mission type

I do that as well. Thanks.

Yes, thanks. I like the live interaction though, so this isn’t always the best choice. Maybe they can add spectating without taking a slot.

I did not even know you could spectate that long. I would not say you really are afk since you are actually doing things like actively observing and moving a mouse around. So I would not think you be banned for spectating.
If you were truly afk and don’t literally do anything after loading a match, I believe by default it will spawn you into the match. If afk in the match I though it used to kick you from the match with a limited activity message.

Where do you spectate mostly? Coastal or blue water matches? What br?

If it’s in a deep water fleet at high BR I can understand that it’s annoying. Generally we are 4v4 or 5v5 + bots so each player has a very big impact on the game

Mostly blue water 6.0+. I don’t do it all the time, but there are some players and ships I like to watch. As long as you stay in spectator mode, you don’t spawn. You could conceivably be AFK the whole match and not spawn, but that kind of defeats the purpose of spectating.

I also like to watch the coastal: in high level matches when some of the great coastal players are playing.

In naval matches every man is needed. In Air or Ground one man aint that big of an issue. You’re letting your team down.

Probably yes. However, most matches the teams switch around, so I’m not overly burdening one player over another.

Oh, I’m not angry about it, trust me. I don’t typically get angered over things as trivial in the grand scheme of things as some random player not actually playing a game they’ve loaded into. But you created this thread to complain about the warning you receive from War Thunder and the “abuse” you get from some players, so I was just providing you with the feedback you requested. I’ll also note that it’s funny to me how you call the in-game player feedback “abuse”, isn’t it? Seems a little like the pot calling the kettle black.

You’ve entirely mischaracterized the situation, when I say “abuse,” I don’t mean someone complaining about me spectating. I mean actual abuse, such as telling me to kill myself, using racial slurs, or going on a cursing tirade.

I’m fine with criticism, but not that. I was also curious about whether or not it was a TOS violation to spectate so, after researching it as far as I could, I decided to ask.

It does seem like this bothers you personally, which is fine, so I don’t see any reason to deny it. You are, of course, welcome to your feelings and opinion.
