Southeast Asian (ASEAN) Machinery Of War Discussion Thread

Credits to @CubicSquare there were some discussions on an ASEAN heli tree way back then on the ASEAN Research Group discord (I think you can PM @Noveos_Republic for a link if youre not in it yet). This however still lacks maritime choppers though from Japan especially (and I think there Thailand has MH-60s of their own as well but unconfirmed if it carried weapons, and the Philippines has an AW-159 that can carry Spike NLOS like the South Korean ones).

ADDENDUM:

Ill just post pics of notable mentions here just for easy reference:

AS550 Fennec [Singapore]

AH-6i Little Bird [Thailand]
boeing-AH-6-2
*Not yet arrived

T-129B Atak [Philippines]

*Technically only has Cirit rockets hence the lower BR rating

Mi-35P [Indonesia]
mi-35p-puspenerbad-indonesian-army-1f9622-small

AH-64E Apache Guardian [Indonesia]

Rooivalk Mk. 1 [Malaysia]

*Malaysia never actually bought the type but it was planned to be exported to Malaysia with Malaysia test flying it

[Personal] Honorable Mentions:

Mistusbishi SH-60K & SH-60L [Japan]

F-AsG5MbAAAczUj
SH-60K is an upgrade from the SH-60J, while the SH-60L is an upgrade from the SH-60K

MH-60S Seahawk [Thailand]:
SH-60-06
*Unconfirmed weapons but pylons are there and the armament is in Thai inventory

AH-1F Cobra [Thailand]

*Basically modernized & upgraded AH-1S

AW-159 Wildcat [Philippines]:

AW-109 [Philippines / Malaysia]:

*Technically only Philippines operates with APKWS rockets, both Malaysia and Philippines carry no other guided weaponry on the AW-109

AUH-76 [Philippines]

*Technically can carry guided weaponry but Philippines never bought any hellfires when this was still in service, so it only carried unguided rockets

Theres a lot of pure rocket helis in ASEAN and others like the AH-64D from Singapore was deemed a copy paste that already existed within the Japanese TT so it wasnt considered. Theres also of course your recent suggestion on the NBO-105.

Is Indonesia going with KAAN instead of the Boromae? Afaik Indonesia is still paying for its share of the dev costs right? This seems pretty wasteful tbh

I’m from a Southeast Asian country. I think it would be cool as the different countries have very different types of jets and tanks. It does not have many low tier and mid tier aircraft and tanks but up tier may be solid.

For Maritime helis Indonesia does have the Westland wasp with torpedo similar to Thailand

2x MK44 torps / 1x MK46 Torp

otherwise the AS565 Panther also can carry the torps

or the NAS 332 Super Puma w/ exocet, athough this was only a dummy version

It’s hardly surprising considering we’ve been trying to distance ourselves from SK and pivoting to Turkey. Even the F-15 & blackhawk procurement is not really concrete as of now (blackhawk has no news in months, F-15 was somewhat discussed as part of the Tariffs recently)

The main cause is probably free from restrictions. the majority of our fighting vehicles/aircrafts are restricted to some degree (such as forbidden to take part in military operations at a certain place), which is precisely why we go to France in the 60s, since they’re fine with selling vehicles to the suppose opponent of their northeastern neighbors.

We tried pivoting to Russia in the 2010s-ish but then got blocked by CAATSA. Belarus is another story, we have done deals with them a lot in the recent years (Flanker modernization, fleet maintance, anti-drone equipments).

I think one comment mentions it best: Don’t believe any procurement deals unless you see a real-life TNI decal on the vehicle or unless the vehicle has been shown in the Armed Forces Parade

Because deals may change, from one president’s term to another (which is pretty fuckin stupid if you ask me)

alright since our aircraft procurement plans are kinda wild, ill compile the rumors and confirmed stuff we are currently planning. Keep in mind some of these are not yet concrete:

  • +12 Additional Rafales planned a couple days back (with Scorpene submarine + other military hardware as a whole package). Total of 42(+12) Rafales on order [CONFIRMED]

  • F-16V Modernization program for the F-16C/D Block52ID through the Ozgur 2 Package [CONFIRMED]

  • TAI TF Kaan Next-Generation aircraft Interest in purchasing/developing [CONFIRMED]

  • rumors of Su-35 & Mirage 2000-5EDA/5DDA contracts have been completed and awaiting delayed announcement supposedly due to controversy (makes sense) [RUMORS]

  • rumors of Indonesia buying 42 used J-10A fighter jets to be announce during IndoDefence 2024 [RUMORS]
Although the amount is not confirmed, MoD’s statement has been going around the news about sending pilots to train and evaluate the aircraft, which pretty much confirmed it, but the post itself by the MoD was deleted because of the controversial nature of the acquisition (lmao) [CONFIRMED]

If it were a new J-10CE at least I can understand the decision, but this is a used J-10As (just like the mirage). Why are we taking that when we have fresh Rafales coming in next year. Additionally no up-to-date news on the F-15EX & KF-21, although the most realistic purchase between the two would probably be the F-15EX

This image started out as a joke but in the future our air fleet might look like that. Truly the Ace Combat Air Force

So by 2060 every country’s jet fighter in inventory? FUN. Also why J10A, I don’t get it, unless they are buying them for performance or something. J10A as far as I know can’t use PL15 or any of the better CAS or any of the newer GPS stuff.

precisely my point, my guess is its a part of a combined arms deal similar to the additional Rafales (jets+ships+others) because otherwise it doesnt make sense.

but ‘not making sense’ seems to be our procurement motto, so who knows

China hasn’t produced any J10s though and AL31FNs haven’t been produced for ages, these would be out of service life pretty quickly.
Even in a deal it would be quite a price to pay.

further explanation on the J10

image

TLDR, originally it was just a rumor, then our chief of staff was offered the plane when they were visiting, now we’re most likely gonna evaluate the aircraft first before concluding on buying or not

So you guys dropped the KF-21 officially?

probably, but most likely we’ll just buy a short number rather than abandoning it completely since it would be a waste otherwise

But doesn’t explain the J10A purchase.

J-10A are just rumors

also forgot to mention, here are my current plans for suggestions (in case anyone is already working on it or something)

  1. Indonesian Naval subtree (active)
  2. Cavalier Mustang II (planning)
  3. Pandur II/cobra IFV & FSV (future, not 100%)

Naval was in development since ages ago but i reworked it like 5 times already and got sidetracked by the NBO105 suggestion as well. Now fully committing to finishing it.

these are for ones ive dropped

  1. F-16C block52ID
  2. SBS LT 20mm & MLRS
  3. Dutch East Indies Campaign Air RB maps (will probably revisit this in the future)

Additional note, IndoDefence is next week and some new stuff will most likely be showcased there, best believe i will note down all the new prototypes and the like when they’re shown

PH just signed the contract for extra FA-50s, probably Blk 20. Should get the same EL radar that’s found on the Kfir C.10 afaik, ofc AMRAAM integration also

Technically the Malaysian FA-50 Block 20s will arrive sooner, but yep the Philippine order is going to probably take until 2030 at most since thats when the contract expires.

Also an update.

Japan’s Diet has finally ratified into law the Japan-Philippine Reciprocal Access Agreement which marks the bilateral military cooperation of Japan & Philippines official. We can expect closer defense ties with the Japanese in the coming years as this relationship grows (as of right now, Japan has 2 other RAAs with UK and Australia respectively).

https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1251648

This also means Philippines has basically the same (well at least very close to it) argument that can be made to bring the Philippines as a subtree for Japan lol but eh, wait & see.

As a part of IndoDefence, Rosoboronexport (most likely on behalf of Russia) offers quite a lot of military equipment for Indonesia, namely:

Air Force
Su-57E
Su-35 Gen 4++
IL-78MK-90A tanker
Ka-52E

S-350E Vityaz and S-400 Triumf SAM system.
Pantsir-S1M

Army
Mi-17

Navy
Project 636 (Kilo-class)
K-300P Bastion Coastal SAM
Project 22160 Patrol Boat
Project 20380 Tigr Corvette

worth noting that these were only offers, just like the J10, nothing in concrete as of yet, although the Su-35 deal was rumored to have been completed, but who knows
