SimEC maps: Bases are too hard to see

,

I am using my eyes. What else would I use?.. 🤦‍♂️

The old bases were much better and shouldn’t have been replaced with a worse option.

I find that the models are fine IMO. I just dont think it need necessarily be made EASIER, just more REALISTIC.

IMO I’d rather have different models for different targets, like fuel depots, forward bases, ammo dumps, vehicle repair compounds, oil refineries, BRIDGES, factories, mining compounds, railyards, supply lines, that type of thing.

I like variety too. I appreciate Gaijin’s attempts to make bases look more realistic. That doesn’t mean they need to blend in with the terrain and be an exercise in squinting just to spot them. Sometimes we just have to admit when an improvement just didn’t work.

Base spotting is not a measure of skill… I see nothing wrong with reverting back to the base models that were actually visible. I find it weird that anybody would even argue against that…

that would depend on what type of target it is. Forward bases would in all likelihood be concealed as best as possible with vegetation, camo nets, camouflage paint, etcetera. Same for airstrips in regards to parked planes. A factory, or railyard, not so much.

And yes. Reconnaissance, target identification, and spotting absolutely are a skill. Look up the special detachment of the USAAF that hired daltonism-afflicted pilots because they could see minute differences in green hues and find fake camouflage/vegetation better than normal people

That’s pretty interesting. I’d definitely invest in that as a pilot or crew skill.

You don’t even see the lights of the airfields unless it’s night, untill you are quite close, if you compare that to MSFS or XPlane, it’s very bad.

Making things realistic means using the same LOD than the rest of buildings of the map, and while the LOD for non interactive things is low, spoting realistic bases will not be the same than in reality.

Target identification is maybe a skill, but not the same skill than IRL, it’s just recognizing blurry patterns, and once you learn the pattern for the map, they change it.

We would need to analize also if spoting is dependent on graphics options, with low graphics you maybe have less details on terrain, and it’s easier, or viceversa …

I have found a way I like to use CCRP even if the HUD is crapy in the plane, I put CCRP to locate the base before it’s properly rendered, and when I see it well, change to CCIP and do my normal bombing, so I don’t waste time trying to spot things that are not rendered yet because of LOD.

Would like to know beforehand, what the target is going to look like. Camouflaged or not, what do i look for: a refinery, an grouping of tents, or a bridge ? That’s the briefing meeting before departure in an mission, so would be realistic to know. I couldn’t figure it out from the map while on sim battles. And also is repetitive, the bases are all tents . Would like to bomb bridges and city, and refineries as well. And fighter escort need to get some bonus for going along with a bomber in a mission.

I would like to see in ASB bigger bases with multiple modules, like the airfields, which could be targeted and attacked separately by different aircraft consecutively in one sortie (team work) or the same aircraft flying multiple sorties.
