Description: The Savoia Marchetti SM86 was an Italian dive bomber made in the thirdies. The development started after the Italian Ministry of defence asked for a new attack aircraft, the “Progetto R”. The SM86 was developed from the the savoia marchetti SM85 with more powerfoul engine and a different design. At the start the aircraft was named SM-85W (W stand for the engines, a par of Walter Sagitta engines IC-SR). Like what happened for the SM85, The Regia Aereonautica ordered two units for test the carapteristic of the aircraft. It flew for the first time in the april 1940 with the second protype flew for the first time in the 1941 but with different engines, the Isotta Fraschini Gamma R.C.35. The Regia Aereonautica was a lot interested in this aircaft since it’s predeccessor, the SM85 ,resulted a complete failure. On the other hand the SM86 had way better flight carapterisitcs and it didn’t have the same problems of the SM85 during a dive. The Regia Aereonautica placed a order of 97 units but the order was later cancelled in favor of the German Ju87. Basically despite the aircraft was a lot better compared to it’s failed brother, it still wasn’t enought. The first prototype was assigned to the 96th gruppo. It was used alongside the Picchiatello (Italian Stukas) against the British in Malta for some missions.

Why it should be in the game: it can be a very good dive bomber for low tier, thanks to it’s load.

I always support a new WWII-era aircraft, especially for one of the lesser nations.

Also, that 800 kg bomb could be really useful. It’d be the biggest bomb available to low-mid tier Italy, to my knowledge.

Looks absolutely epic.

+1 - I note that wiki says the early version - the SM-85 - is considered Savoia-Marchetti’s worst aircraft of all time!! Mainly due to low power engines, that were replaced on the 86!

there is a reason if I skipped the sm85 and I suggested this one

The Ba-88 is a reasonable WT a/c despite being a disaster… and 37 SM-85’s were made… ;)

well the ba 88 was not as tremendous as the sm85 was
