History.
The SAI Ambrosini 207 was an Italian light fighter aircraft produced during the Second World War by SAI Ambrosini. The aircraft was based on the previous SAI Ambrosini 7 racing aircraft, suitably modified to make it a warplane. The history of the plane began badly as the first prototype of the immediately preceding vehicle, the SAI 107, was destroyed in an accident in which the famous pilot Arturo Ferrarin died. The SAI 207 was designed as a re-engined and rearmed SAI 107. The aircraft’s performance could be considered exceptional while the evaluation process could not ignore the fact that the SAI 207 could be made with the use of non-strategic materials. Over time, problems arose regarding the development of the aircraft, which however did not discourage the Italian authorities who actually ordered 3,000 examples from various companies, of which however only twelve examples were actually delivered. An example of these aircraft, registered MM8433, was captured by the Germans after the armistice of 8 September 1943, and it was noted by the German authorities that the aircraft had been armed with better armament than that of the classic SAI 207s: this example was in fact equipped with two MG 151 cannons in the wings (a solution later adopted in the subsequent SAI 403.). Not much is known about what happened to this plane, but it is known for certain that it was tested by the Luftwaffe in order to be able to adopt it even if the outcome of these tests is not known.
Armaments and propulsion.
The vehicle was armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns located in the upper part of the nose and firing through the propeller disc using a synchronization mechanism and two 20 mm MG-151 cannons housed in the wings with 200 rounds.
The plane was powered by a 750 hp Isotta Fraschini Delta RC.40 engine, which pushed the plane up to a maximum speed of 620 km/h.
