There are quite a few people here from both sides that think that regenrative steering is fine as long as they make it optional/togglable. There are only winners when using this approach.
There are just a bunch of more extremist individuals from both sides for who the only way is their way.
For someone who dislikes it so much when their opinion is perceived to be invalidated as you, you sure do seem to love invalidating everyone else’s opinion.
I just don’t see how this can be toggleable, if a specific tank did not have steering with track braking, for example, and had only this option. Maybe only making it gamemode-specific, as plane flight model performance.
Like, in ground arcade every tank steers with track braking, in realistic and simulator - with steering type it had…
Well, as I said, for specific ground modes then, yeah. I would like a forced option in Simulator battles then.
Anyway, I just feel like it is a part of the vehicle performance. If some vehicles have reversible gearbox and can go forward and backward equally at 70km/h, would I try to say that realistic gearbox should be a toggleable option, so a tank with -4 km/h should have a reversible gear option as well?
Same goes with gear amount, hydropneumatic suspension, ability to swim, ability to to turn around on the spot (even for wheeled bases)…
I mean, wheeled tanks do steer realistically in the game, no one every tried to make it an option, if they should be able to “turn on spot” or not. If a real base was able to do that looks at French tree, then it can do that in the game, if not - it cannot, innit?
Regarding the disabling of AOA limiters on aircraft, this is a common feature found in military aircraft worldwide, so there is a certain justification for incorporating it into the game system.
However, the ability to disable limiters on tank steering systems is not, in reality, a universal feature. There have been very few such vehicles from the WWII era through to the present day.
(To my knowledge, examples include the Tiger tank, which allowed for steering via braking in emergencies; while the Panther tank could perform pivot turns using its brakes, this was a capability designed into the vehicle from the start rather than a matter of disabling a limiter.)
I counted seconds… On live server he did this trip in 99 seconds:
On devserver with automatic gearbox option - in 103 seconds.
On devserver with manual gearbox option… 80 SECONDS
Sounds like a cool skill-based addition, huh. If they will tune auto gear option a bit and fix some bugs, it may be perfect. Its like if you manually control your plane and know what to do - you can outperform a guy with mouse steering or something.
Manual gear video:
Shows that the biggest problem is automatic gearbox tuning.
Uploaded a video of manual steering, can be done better, but anyway you can see that the main problem is automatic gearbox settings that do not lower the gear when player stops pressing W.
With manual you can just “choose” your turn radius. Maybe if gaijin will fix automatic gearbox it will be better.
I also think that the problem at the moment is how the automatic transmission works and not the Regenerative Steering itself. These videos were made with Manual transmission
Once Gaijin adjusts the auto transmission logic, the gear ratios or even the turning radius for each gear it should work properly without having to use manual.
I have to say though that regenerative steering feels a lot smoother than the previous handling model even in it’s current state
It looks like it briefly goes from 3rd gear up to 6th gear with small delay inbetween. As if 4th and 5th gears were not loading enough to even have a time to “wait til rpm goes beyond 2000”. As if the engine is too strong, or regenerative steering duplicates kinetic energy somehow.
Maybe its a problem with modern powerful tank. Maybe if they tested it with ww2 vehicles that had it - it would work better, idk.
This is another issue i think we have. It’s also highlighting the issues we have with too many gears, and no driveline inefficiencies.
Tanks that do 0-32km/h in 7-8s already do it in 4s in game.
