Are the engines simply that hot(like I’ve heard with the f14A) that the afterburner has to be off to flare missiles launched somewhat close? Like a few times now today even a 1km launched aim9p managed to hit me. Maybe it’s cause the flares dispense at such a downward angle?
They shouldn’t be too hot because you’re pooping large caliber flares. They’re probably either following the flares to you, or IRCCM missiles.
you should probably turn your after burner off whenever you flare to evade missiles regardless of how hot your engine is, otherwise it increases the likelihood that the missiles will ignore your flares
Yeah that’s what my friend told me 2 years ago when I first got to this rating but honestly I never had to in 99% of planes I played. Guess I just have to with this one
Unfortunately unless I’m mistaken they’re just normal caliber and none of those deaths were from magic 2 but guess I’ll just watch my back more than relying on the auto flare from maw
yeah very much so, also make sure to actually change your flight path each time when you get a missile thrown at you, it might often be the case where your flares are launched in a way that the missile can’t see so it will never go for them
You got 60 large caliber flares mixed with 120 normal flares. Either way, you should always change flight path. Try figuring out which missile is getting through your MAW, then located which aircraft carry it, then focus on them.
I found out looking through the UI that f-111F in US gets large caliber but UK one doesn’t, but whatever. Guess it’s just hot engines and I’ll pay attention more on my route to a base.
That explains it… yea turn off afterburners…
Missiles launched at 1 km or below are much more likely to hit you. Rise time of flares is modeled in War Thunder - by the time your flares are burning hot enough, it very well could be too late.
Not only are the F-111 engines much hotter than other jets but the heat signature is also larger because of how huge they are. Also despite having large countermeasures the pattern they’re launched in can be awkward if you’re trying to flare a missile from certain angles.
I haven’t played the F-111 but I’ve killed many with “weak” IR missiles through flare dumps. If you flare and maneuver out of the way it should be enough to decoy anything less advanced than an AIM-9L.
Yeah even though I flared late from a side aspect python 3 yesterday it still hit me. Honestly since the 11.7/12.0 premiums outrun me to bases(lmao sad) I’ll just go back to using jaguar IS to get rank 8
IRL, most missiles would not be decoyed by flares if the target was on full reheat. Especially in rear aspect. So in that regard its probably very accurate.
the RAF conducted a test with Aim-9L fired at a Jaguar GR1 dropping Large Calibre Flares and htat was the results of their tests
Interesting, I wouldn’t mind that being how it is in game. I cannot imagine trying to play a vehicle like jh-7a at 12.3 with only heat seekers, or even the kurnass 2000.
The issue is how IR signatures are modeled is pretty poor in game, its all based upon thrust output of the engine and the exhaust plumes are not modeled at all.
Has some wierd affects
But yeah, would be the next big overhaul for Air combat I think
