I write this topic because I have this impression since a long time, and even after a long pause of the game, after just 6 games, the same bad feeling is coming again.
How can I explain it… ?
The problem :
Realistic is just badly done and just arcade mode but with few differences.
I play in bomber planes in br<6.0, and every time I fly with the bomber and meet an ennemy, the time between the first shell shotted by the ennemy and me destroyed is never more than 5 seconds (and 5 seconds seems a lot compared to what I have experienced).
Many reasons to die :
- wing cut out
- tail cut out
- explosion of the bomber
- pilot snipe
- fire (not the main cause, but we will talk about that).
This means that since the moment the fight begins, I am nearly dead instantly every time. Why playing in “realistic battle” if I can’t fight ? I very very rarely felt the moment of tension where your aircraft is severly damaged and you struggle to bring your aircraft back to airfield. It is impossible to have this stress of a fight during which you don’t know if you will be alive or not at the end.
Why this impression and how it should be :
Why is it impossible for gaijin to do a game where it is possible to fight more than 5 seconds ?
- Fighting a few minutes, to feel the stress of a good equilibrated fight
- Feel the tension to be severly damaged and still go to the base ou have to and in the countryside
- Have the feeling to win a fair victory when destroying an ennemy plane
- Have the feeling to be dead after a great fight enjoyed by everyone when beeing destroyed by the others
- Give interrest to all vehicles
During war, not all planes were shotted down in 5 seconds. We all have in mind a story in which a severly damaged plane went back to his airfield.
I will do the controversial and polemical comparison with reality, with real experiences.
I will compare to what was experienced in 1940, with real dogfights between bombers and planes, fighters and planes.
A Bloch 152 pilot, flying straight ahead and not doing big manoeuvers, recieved 11 shots (I mean 11 moments where ennemy plane Me 109 could fire his guns on the Bloch) in his damaged plane before being shotted down. In this game, a 1 second shot is enough to shot you down.
A LeO451 early could resist to a 30 minutes dogfight against 3 fighters and still beeing able to reach his base (and the same story with a 15 minutes fight).
A Breguet 693 in fire on both engines was able to open fire on a column, turn around and go back in his lines before beeing forced to land because there was not enough metal on the wings to hold the plane in the air.
Multiple Amiot 143 had to face The great Wall of Doom, with very strong DCA fire and Me110 planes attacking, and some of the where able to go back in their line, some of them able to land on the ground.
And from all the stories, testimonials and other documents I could read, I never saw one story where the plane was cut in half at any place (Even if I know it is not that rare, especially after 1940), nor a story where a bomber exploded in the sky.
I don’t say it is not possible to have a wing cut off. I just say it is absolutely not as usual in really than it is in the game.
In real dogfights in 1940, to be enough precise, a fighter had to open fire at 50m. We are far from the 1km we see in the game.
And i never read a testimonial of a pilot saying he was dead in the sky piloting his plane ! (it is a joke for this one).
I don’t say it is impossible to have a plane destroyed an fall of the sky in 5 seconds, I say it is possible to defend more than 5 seconds.
What i the source of the problem ?
Of course, there’s never one cause to a problem. It is a sum of multiple problems. Here is what I think :
- The game is designed in a way such that an aircraft can stand behind a plane as long as he wants
- You can take all your time to fire all of your shells (at least all the necessary ones) in the ennemy airplane in just no time (you can empty nearly all your ammos in the ennemy plane in just 3 seconds)
- You recieve too much shells at the same time compared to what the plane was designed to recieve
- Ennemy planes can shoot you from 1.10 km - Weapons are too precise in the sky, allowing the ennemy to open fire at 1km
- The gunners are not efficient (if not completely useless)
- You can’t pilot your aircraft towards and menoeuvers AND firing back with your gunner. You have to choose : defend with the guns and fly in a straight line OR doing manoeuvers with the aircraft with absolutely no defenses, like flying a bomber without any guns.
- Fire can cut and destroy everything in 3 seconds
- Damages of weapons are too high (not completely sure of this one, i think it is accurate but the real cause linked to this point is just below)
- Damages to airplanes is exagerated (example : I fly in an assault bomber. I recieve a single 12.7mm hit into the fuselage without any severe damages other than the fuselage. The fuselage becomes orange on the small aircraft view. The aircraft loses between 50 km/h and 100 km/h of speed. How a single 12.7mm shell, how a single hole in the fuselage is enough for the aircraft to lose 70 km/h of direct speed ?)
Possible solutions :
Better than just a discussion, I propose some solutions to the problem, because I am not just complaining.
- Allowing other players to take control of your gunners, to have one guy as a pilot, the other to defend
- Put better equilibrated gunners
- Put a mean or any solution to reduce the time a fighter can stand behing a bomber in one time (finding a solution so that the ennemy plane can’t stand behind your plane more than 20 seconds)
- Put more realistic fires, lasting more than 2 seconds but not more than 1 minute
- Readjust / modify the impact on performances of a damaged part of the plane.
Ouf course, I don’t ask to the game to have a 30 minutes dogfight each time I want to shot down a bomber, but between 5 seonds and 30 minutes, there are other numbers. Let me fight in this fighting game.
Is this game only for personnal satisfaction of players instantly kill other planes ?
