I’m sure there’s over a dozen MiG-21 variants so the question may depend - but overall, I find these things to be absolutely insane…?
Most have access to effective IR AAMs(30g). Some have access to good radar missiles as long as you’re not near ground level. They have insane speed, insane acceleration, insane climb rate, good airbrakes, most have countermeasures… the only downside is energy retention if you try to endlessly dogfight, and cannon ammo count. Apart from that, these things feel absolutely untouchable. I’m sure it’s a decompression issue again, but I find these things to be absurdly unfair to play against and overall grossly undertiered. I feel like most people don’t think so because they meet bad low level players who bought premium variants and subsequently get dunked on.
Am I alone on this?
Define a good radar missile lmao
You ever played base R60?

There are 20+ of these in game. It would help if you specified so we could talk about specific ones.
R-60s are not super special or highly effective missiles. They’re alright.
None have access to “good” radar missiles. The R-3R is an AIM-9B with a radar seeker head. It’s very avoidable.
Some do, some don’t.
Some do, some don’t.
this rarely does anything in jets
not unique to the 21
not unique to the 21
These things generally apply to all MiG-21s:
- Bad guns (Gsh-23 has effective damage but very low velocity and ammo count and NR-30 is the same)
- Bad energy retention
- Bad radars
- Not actually that fast, mid top speed usually and capable of ripping
- Short range, mid missiles if they use R-60s, early variants get AIM-9B copies
Maybe more but those are the big ones that come to mind
The undertiered ones are the MiG-21SMT, maybe the MiG-21MF, and the J-7D. The rest are as high as they can reasonably go in the current state of compression.
As you said, it’s likely a decompression issue but if you specify which MiG-21s you are talking about we can have a deeper conversation.
