Ive been trying to play the RAH-66 recently, and even with perfect positioning and everything, all my missiles just get shot down, and not even Pantsir or large SAM radars are the issue, even soviet era OSA and 2S6 are somehow picking up the frontal aspect RCS of a Hellfire from 8km away and the proxy fuse also somehow seeing it and shooting it down, mind you those systems have less than 50% interception capabilities for ANTI SHIP MISSILES! not atgms…
Gameplay wise its so silly that 2 or 3 players up can just sit in spawn with their free spaa that they didnt even grind for and click through their fantasy all seeing radar list and make my helo completely useless, while i had to get SP in a tank, position, duck and peek to laze and keep an eye for CAP, all to dump all 6 missiles on an spaa that cost 60 sp.
Not mentioning some other helos that are straight up not usable at all, like the Swedish Mi-28 where you face a handful of 2S6 every game that your rwr cant even pick up, 11.7 helos that face SAM systems where you basically lock you out of the game, and also how radar sees perfectly through dense trees, making even peeking up the horizon to laze an IOG launch not viable since the spaa will always spot you first. I swear this game has such incredibly poor gameplay and horrid selective realism it baffles me what goes on in the devs heads…
Air should be difficult. At lower BRs aircraft have near free kills on AA. At higher teirs it is reversed, though lets be honest, a good pilot still is going to get >1kdr in aircraft. Helis still have dumbfire rocket lobbing that generates free kills on AA for no actual effort or skill.
If you need to be a good pilot to get a <1 K/D in a plane, its kinda pointless spawning it considering it costs 700 sp or more. For that amount you can spawn 2 to 3 tanks and get 1 kill each on average…I hope you kinda see my point?
If you spawn spaa for 70 sp and take out one plane and then die to something, thats already a huge net postive of 630 spawn points for your team. Or more like the enemy team is losing 630 spawn points compared to yours out of their sp pool that keeps players in the game. If you then can rather easily shoot down all their ordinance which nets yourself even more sp to get back in the game (something certain spaas are miles better at then others…looking at you, spaa that shall not be named of a western asian country) thats just the easy way of getting players back into the match that were almost out, for 0 real effort, while turning the most “expensive” to spawn vehicles of the other team useless.
Now you can argue cas thats too strong is also bs and i absolutely agree with that, no one wants to play the game if youre just free kills to click at from the air and you basically cant move anywhere on the open af maps (something that you basically need to do to play the game and win)
BUT if you turn the part of wt that makes it unique, lots of vehicle classes in the same match, into being completely pointless, then you might as well just remove those from the game and create world of arcadey tanks 2.0. Which, im all for having an optional tank only mode, but if spawning planes and helis is a good way of making your team lose bc its a net negative even before you spawned then we dont need the huge combined maps to begin with.
Im also quite sure that would open a whole other can of worms: Every match youd be having players camping power positions that they are impossible to get out of if it wasnt for cas, locking almost the whole map down from very advantageous spots and it would be way more stale and impossible to deal with certain spots or have comebacks where your team would be able to break out of being locked in spawn from hull or tank down positions. Just a wild guess, would need to show in a tank only mode but im fairly sure that it would just be something else then that would be insanely annoying.
I mean if planes can pop up behind a hill 5 km from the battlefield and instantly launch ir guided agms at 7 different targets that will die 100% like 5 seconds later that needs SOME sort of counterplay no? The question would be how thats implemented and which ordiance can be locked from which ranges (radar or IR), which ordinance can be detected by which search radar at which ranges, which ordinance is big enough that missiles can proxy on them etc.
Theres tons of possibilities that come to mind that lie well within the mechanics that are already in game, yet we have: slow af pars gets instantly detected and you have 20 seconds to shoot it down, which is basically easy af even with saclos spaa or even proxy fuze rounds like with 2s38 and cv90s due to how slow and close to the ground it is and kh38s which are certain death and so fast that some top tier spaa struggle heavily with shooting even one of these down.
The vast majority of games aren’t determined by spawn points, so your argument is irrelevant. Opportunity cost is more relevant than spawn points. You don’t get 10 70 point AA for every 700 point aircraft. If the enemy puts up 10 wyverns vs your 10 AA at 4.0, you are probably losing. Doesn’t matter that the spawn points don’t match up, generating enough for a single plane has been trivial for a long time now. Between PE8s dropping bombs from 4+km in the sky where WW2 aren’t effective to rocket barrages from outside AA effective range to suicide bombers getting multiple kills, its trivial to have far more impact in a game as a plane than an AA.
Planes are the medieval cavalry to the AA’s spearman. The spearman is effective in one place, the plane is mobile and effective everywhere. With AA only having tracer belts until 9.0, planes can easily avoid parts of the map you aren’t on. There is a reason cavalry was the king of warfare until crossbow/gunpowder. Yeah, they cost more to outfit, but heavy cavalry won battles.
Idk about ground cuz I only play air, but yeah it would make sense to actually model the rcs of everything in the air, rather than just a few select aircraft
Here’s my arguement, regardless of whether CAS is OP or not.
If aircrafts have their own dedicated “air only” game mode, why can’t ground vehicles have one as well?
I’m pointing out how the combined arms game mode has incredibly unrealistic and unbalanced elements. Your personal opinion about whether there should be a tanks-only game mode has nothing to do with this discussion.
I don’t know why people come into every CAS discussion and start rambling about “just play a tank” or “this is a tank game!” when that has nothing to do with the actual issue: the balance and realism of CAS versus SPAA at high tier is a complete mess.
If you are against CAS as a whole, go make your own thread about that, this is a discussion about current game mechanics.
Huh? thats exactly how top tier cas with kh38s works. Unless, ofc you cant lock and shoot them instantly, but it doesnt take that long with the insanely good targeting pods with thermals, especially if you have some info before popping up. Watching vids of some very good top tier cas players it takes 2-3 seconds. Try intercepting a volley of that and the plane itself in the sad af type 03. its impossible. You can get 1 maybe two missiles (except if he pops up too far, say 7 km or more). in all other cases your missiles wont hit anything.
Thats what im saying? It should be possible to target the really strong air 2 ground ordinance at least, maybe even all of them as it is at the moment? The really strong ones are rather big missiles and should have a bigger RCS than lets say spikes? If you wouldnt be able to detect KH38s theyd be even more op than they already are.
