This might’ve been bad flare management on my part but back then R-60Ms could do stuff like this because all allaspects had really good flare resistance.

Doubt it would’ve killed me that way. The R-60M has little explosive filler compared to other missiles.

The 9L has a longer guidance delay
They are basically the same now. R-60M has no advantages what so ever, except extreme shots at knife range

Yeah r60 doesn’t outpull the 9l now at all. the fuse delay is the only advantage it has for point blank headons

Its garbage in high tiers but its not trash at like 11.0.
I would still take AIM-9G over the R-60M. If both are gonna get flared anyway, at least 9G has like 2.5X the range, and is great for stealth shots at high altitude.
I like the R-60Ms for headons for my MiG-21bis
Just launch them at the 300m mark head to head. It will chase the flares every time, but the flares will be within proxy fuse range of the target.
Unless the opponent is smart enough to pre-flare. Then you should have just used guns instead of the R-60meme
The Mig29 was very strong. The f16 had a maximum overload of 9g, meanwhile the mig29 had no such speed loss or overload limitations. However when the 29cmt came out they destroyed both mig29s, the first one suffered less but now it loses speed pretty badly. And the SMT can’t do anything at all.
But then there was balance, for the f16 was many times better at raitfighting, with better 9L
