AESA isn’t a foolproof you know, any decent radar that has wide angles can catch you rather easily in that position, coupling with HMD it would be even worse for opponent.
So yeah HMD still makes quite difference in both real life and in game.

1:51… AIM-7 shot at sub 4km with out leading it at all? Are you trying to miss to make a point? AIM-7M are optimized for BVR, same as AIM-7Ps btw, they would have missed there too, that’s the kind of shot you use the AAM-3s for, lead it and pull you nose up to loft it over the hill he was flying over.

Not hundred percent true.
Scan speed makes up at medium to long range while in close ranges HMD still comes out on top.

yes obviously, but at 13.0 HMD is a luxury anyways, so having the AESA radar’s scan speed really makes up for that disadvantage for the overall air RB environment

Saying they’re optimized for bvr doesn’t matter, they’re the third best turning fox 1 in the game. Plus other missiles like r27er are plenty good in below 5 kn engagements

I read a pilot’s recount of the event, while he didn’t mention the flight performance in detail vs the F-16, he did comment on how insanely unfair it was for the MiG-29 to be able to win by just getting the HMD lock (He was in the MiG-29)

13.0 and even the 13.3 HMD is a luxury that only the Russians and Swedes have, and it’s not a big deal as long as you’re aware that your aircraft doesn’t have it

Sure you can use them WVR, but at ~3km at a target crossing your nose if you do not lead the shot you are going to notice the slower acceleration of the motor.
