P51D Simulator Flight Model /Aiming Issues

Can Gaijin please fix the P51D Flight Model as in Sim it is mushy and tail heavy feeling and wobbles all over the show making it nearly impossible to aim even after hours of playing around with control settings it’s still terrible

And yes I have trimmed it !! Also I have only ever played sim and it’s unlike any other plane in game

Have you trimmed it?

Yes of course lol

Just making sure lol did you send in a bug report?

No I haven’t I’ll do it now

I haven’t personally flown the Mustang in sim, but I have flown the Spitfire, and what I will say is: some planes are just… wobbly. Meanwhile when I fly other planes of the same rank, even within Britain, they’re much smoother. It might just be the plane, or Gaijin overexaggerating effects as they do in takeoff (Some planes wobble to the left and right much more than their real-life counterparts)

  1. What input are you using? HOTAS, Mousejoystick, xbox contorller? Please screenshot, upload your controls to imgur and share
  2. Which P51D?
  3. How much fuel? Fuel amount makes a MASSIVE diff for P51D (see for demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNpVGfPWmu4)
  4. Did you turn sense of flight to 0?

Possible causes:

  • You have too much fuel which causes the aft fuselage fuel tank to be filled. This makes the plane INCREDIBLY unstable and wobbly. This is a real life, realistic issue. Take min fuel. Seriously, watch the linked video to see the difference
  • You have less than 100% sensitivity for the rudder/yaw/pitch sliders in “Movement” - they should be 100% in sim. In ARB you want less than 100% (and thus guides recommend less than 100%) to make 1 click not immediately cause max deflection. The sensitivity sliders are a lie - they’re filters/control damping, not sensitivity. Meaning, they make it so that your inputs experience significant lag. Once I realized this, my planes’ nose started behaving as expected.
  • Try non-linearity settings in the roll/pitch/yaw axes (I wouldnt go higher than 2) and ensure control step is 0. Higher than 0 control step introduces a jerky lag before the axis begins to move.
  • Are you flying coordinated in turns? Your nose will wobble towards your outside wing without input, making aiming harder. Proper rudder & aileron coordination is critical to avoid this. This issue is worse with planes with worse yaw stability, and bubble canopies over the “razorback” design led P51Ds to become less stable until later models that expanded the vertical stabilizer with a dorsal tail filet. In WT, D10NA and later has the fin, D5 doesn’t.
  • If you’re flying with mouse joystick, try “STANDARD” rather than “Simplified.” Simplified kinda works but breaks down fast outside of specific planes

Looking at my D5 with 31 min fuel in a custom (wobbliest of the D variants), the plane didn’t feel any unusual when flown at high energy. It’s a brick when under 350 or 400 kph tho.

If you’re on mousejoy, give my controls a try (backup yours first):
(Warthunder SB Mousejoy controls - Pastebin.com)

Use by making a .blk file with notepad in

Documents\My Games\WarThunder\Saves

then load from file in the control setup. Unintuitive part of it is that rudder works like in IL-2, not Warthunder meaning pressing Q makes your rudder pedal stay depressed and only pressing E makes it happy again. ~2-3 quick taps of Q/E correspond to coordinated flight in a medium turn.

WASD is head rotation, 1,3 is head lean left/right, x resets to default view, tab+wasd is leaning. RMB is head raise, tab rmb is head lower.

I use relative control in sim. I’ve found that it vastly simplifies gunnery, despite the comparative disadvantage it implies in rate fights (I tap WASDQE and it usually works just fine)

If u flew the p51 d in sim u will know what I mean mate

I play PS4 controller

I use 30 min fuel 2.4 linearity 100% sensitivity and 90 multiplayer as 100 makes it worse and I play relative controls the problem I have is aiming in the vertical axis as it is unlike all other planes

Can you save a screen capture of flying in a custom match or test flight mission editor with the P51D vs a plane you’re confident in and upload it to youtube? I dunno if PS has such functionalities.

It would make identifying the issue you have easier as I’d said I did not encounter anything unusual with the P51D5 compared to other planes I fly (ergo - it’s not like a spitfire whose pitch inputs are the first derivative of AoA (ergo - pulling back stick corresponds to increasingly rapid change in AoA rather than directly changing the AoA), and ergo its nose stops pitching when you let go (unlike at full fuel P51D5).)

Yeah the main problem is that the nose doesn’t stop pitching when I let stick go like it does in other planes

Also I’m talking about d20 and d30 I haven’t used d5 for ages

Basically u know what it does with full fuel in pitching moment well it still does it just to a slightly less degree now no matter what I do

Fyi I have been an aircraft engineer for over 20 years and a pilot so I do have an understanding of aerodynamics

I fly the spitfire mainly and occasionally the p51b and have no issues with either of them or any other plane in WT only the p51 d

It annoys me as I love p51d in real life and I know for a fact that in real life a p51d and spitfire are easy to fly and nicest WW2 aircraft to fly yet in WT they’re the hardest…

Maybe the sensitivity is made worse by the fact that I use a controller but if that’s the case why can I get UpTo 15 kills in a match in p51 early yet In a p51 d I struggle to get 6 as I will miss a heap due to spraying ammo all over the sky

Different in what sense? I forgot to mention that I inverted the Y axis so that moving the mouse up moves the nose up. I think I also inverted the camera Y axis, but I’m not on my PC now
