FFA P-16 Mk.III ‘X-HB-VAC’

It is the fourth aircraft in the P-16 series and the first Mk.III aircraft. Several parts from the aircraft’s dismantlement were used to restore the X-HB-VAD.
History

This fourth version was completed in 1957 and given the identification number ‘J-3004’. However, as the project was canceled in 1958, FFA attempted to convert the P-16 into civilian development, and in 1959, it received the identification number X-HB-VAC and entered the civilian market in earnest. The test pilot for this aircraft was American William Lear. X-HB-VAC flew a total of 55 times over 27 hours, testing rockets and bombs. What’s interesting is that the P-16 Mk.III can operate two AIM-9s. The Swiss Army introduced the AIM-9B (Flz Lwf LL 63) in 1963, so if the P-16 had been introduced to the Swiss Army, it would have actually fought with AAM.
This aircraft ended its life in June 1980 when it was disassembled with a cutting torch. Some parts were used to restore the X-HB-VAD for display in the museum. X-HB-VAD is currently on display at the Flieger-Flab Museum in Dübendorf.
