Basic Background

On October 3, 2016, Chinese state television CCTV indirectly confirmed for the first time the existence of a Chinese development program for a fourth-generation battle tank in its program “Great Craftsmen” (大国工匠). In an interview with Chief Lu Renfeng from the state-owned arms manufacturer China North Industries Group (NORINCO), it was mentioned that he had been involved in Chinese tank projects for 37 years – starting with the early Type 59 and continuing through to a fourth-generation battle tank that was under development at the time. This statement is considered the first official hint of such a program by Chinese authorities.
On October 9th 2022, another CCTV program entitled “Chasing the Light” showed a previously unknown tank that was heavily obscured and deliberately blurred. Based on the silhouette shown and the context, military observers speculated that it could be a prototype or technology demonstrator of a fourth-generation Chinese battle tank.
In January 2023, this assessment was further reinforced when a technology demonstrator for a fourth-generation battle tank was presented at the Second International Forum for Engineering and Technology Strategy for Aerospace and Shipbuilding. The vehicle on display was used in particular to test an active protection system. Even before an official name was announced, features such as a possible hybrid drive and an unmanned turret were already considered likely by experts. Due to the use of unconventional and sometimes revolutionary technologies, the vehicle was given the unofficial nickname „Double Outrageous“ by military enthusiasts, alluding to its radical development approach.

The ZTZ-100 Overall

The Type 100 is designed as a modern, modular battle tank and can be equipped with either a 105 mm cannon with an automatic loading system or, alternatively, a 30, 35 or 40 mm autocannon turret (then ZBD-100). This modular “building block principle” allows the armament to be selected depending on the respective mission and at the same time simplifies maintenance, repair, and replacement of damaged weapon systems. The main armament is supplemented by a remote-controlled weapon module with a 12.7 mm machine gun.
The ZTZ-100 uses the GL-6 active protection system, consisting of two turrets, each with four ready-to-use projectiles. Compared to its predecessor, the GL-5, it has expanded and newer sensor technology. Four millimeter wave radar antennas provide all-round surveillance, while a fifth, upward-facing antenna specifically detects threats from the upper hemisphere, such as UAVs or top attack ammunition.
In addition, an optoelectronic sensor station for detecting infrared signatures and laser warning sensors are integrated.
Powered by a hybrid drive system consisting of a 1,500 hp diesel engine, generator, battery storage, and electric drive motors, the ZTZ-100 has a increased survivability, as the vehicle remains fully maneuverable on electric power alone in the event of failure or damage to the combustion engine. In addition, the electric powertrain takes into account the greatly increased energy requirements of modern on-board systems, as a separate auxiliary engine is no longer necessary.
Last but not least; a combat weight of less than 35 tons with a hull weight of less than 25 tons and is operated by a crew of three. It is roughly 7,440 mm long, 3,720 mm wide, and 2,500 mm high, reaches a top speed of approximately 65 km/h, and has a maximum range of around 500 kilometers.

+why does it always turn the + into an dot

But why call it Armata at Home? I think is quite different, like China being able to build it, and also serves different purpouse; we recently got to see Video footage of what looks like an new heavier MBT with the classic 125mm Gun so the ZTZ-100 maybe not supposed to be the MBT after all…?

+1 Would be the ultimate cap for a dedicated Chinese light tank line. While the ZTZ100 is called an MBT, it’s only a few tons heavier than the VT5 so it’ll certainly be designated as a light tank in game. The Chinese MBT line can be capped off by their upcoming next-gen 125mm MBT instead.

The future is promising. Perhaps it can be used as the ultimate top light tank in China.

No ATGMs?

Probably has loitering munitions instead

I am excited to see China grow in the next few updates, they are going to have one of the most powerful top tier

+1 for sure. I’m with Eugen though and think this should go after the inevitable ZTQ15. A few years down the road we’ll probably see a ZTZ99A replacement, that can be the crown jewel of the tree.

We dont know anything about this vehicle, we dont need more of Gaijin’s fantasy…

Technically possible but we know that ain’t happening

Most top tier vehicles are “Gaijin’s Fantasy” these days as there’s very few publicly available info out there.

Yeah and thats why i was against modern vehicles entirely. But now that they are a reality at least choose the things that we have some info about that educated guesses can be based upon

Well the Chinese media did mention some of the basic specifications of these new tanks.

Wow China just pumps out vehicles, crazy.

I remember seeing this live. I’m honestly pretty impressed. But it seems like we don’t know much about this vehicle, so I’m not sure if it should be added

There the worlds factory with lots of Civil Military Tech trade so ideas and concepts can be tested she is a hybrid there are videos of running silent. I don’t see her as a Armata clone but the Armata just has development concepts that are the future like unmanned turret and heavy armored hull. I don’t think the Armata has VR helmet that was shown.

There is also a heavy MBT in development still so we may see that one day though from some talk its being re-engineered to take into account FPV drones. Also possibly Hydrogen powered as China is also becoming the capital for Hydrogen powered heavy work vehicles so the tech is being developed and tested so a tank is logical.

Kind of true but there is enough out there if Gaijin would want to add it.

The Armata had good concepts the Chinese took the best of what they saw internationally and used it to spice up domestic development.

Everyone is going to unmanned turret since the late cold war due to the end of the cold war people slowed the development of new tanks. Due to end of unipolarity era tank development is back on full steam so old ideas developing at a slower rate are finished and modified with new ideas like the VR helmet that could not of existed in the 90s or early 2000s for use on tanks.

Yeah but the Armata did not create those concepts nor was it even the first one to implement those and China has had been developing on this since before the Armata released too

China been basically just 1:1 copying Western Designs since the very second they were able to. All of their own modern EQ from Jets to Tanks to just basic Infantry EQ and structuring to how they even operate together etc is from Western design (Keep in mind i said modern; im aware they still have ton of Russian Stuff around too)
