Has 7 wheels instead of 6 (like the ZTZ-100 has) and looks like using the 125mm Gun as well instead of to 105mm on the ZTZ100
So seems like China did actually make a new heavier MBT alongside the ZTZ-100

Post this in machinery of war discussion please
Edit: Thanks!
its very square on the back
It took ~40 years for the Type 59 to even start getting replaced, we have a long ways to go until they start replacing Type 96As and Type 99s, another good example is how long they’ve been keeping the J-7 in service
There’s a huge difference in economy and manufacturing capability between china of 40 years ago and china of today. The initial J-11 and perhaps even some J-11A have already been retired to training bases.
Then why would 96As that are apparently being phased out get new APS upgrades?
I think because China still has a ton of ZTZ96s in Service (around 1.000-1.500 according to google) and APS is quite easy to just slap onto them on mass…or maybe just for demonstration / testing / export? but seems clear now that China has also developed a new heavier MBT alongside the already shown ZTZ-100
