That I think was confirmed by both sides to have shot down a MiG 29 at some insane distance! Sooo it probably fits this category of next Gen Fox 3…though the R77M probably more so
Exactly this. These missiles used by the S-300, BUK M3, SAMP/T, and Type 03 all cost tens of millions of dollars. They should not be machine gunning them willy nilly at everything in the sky. They should only fire if:
The target is a high priority
The target is close to, or within the NEZ
The target has already been up high for a minumum length of time
The target is above a certain altitude
The missile has a high PK
All of these would have 2 exceptions:
The target has already beeen fired at (so they won’t just abandon a missile after it is already fired)
The target is inside a certain range of the SAM site, and maybe also within a certain range of specific assets like the EWRs that are supposed to be given a function soon (this would represent a top priority target that must be destroyed)
This would stop the long range SAMs from shooting someone who just took off or is making a fast popup attack (for something like an S-300, there is no point at shooting someone who is popping up for a short period of time because they will quickly get back down to the ground and break LOS)
Don’t forget the Sargent Stout. It would probably be one of the better ones since it has proxy ammo and a hemispherical aesa radar like the Spyder AIO with 360x65 degree scanning angles.
It wasn’t even just a datamine, there were controls added to the dev server for firing towed decoys and similar things. Though that was probably a mistake, I don’t think they meant to reveal that so early.
Most likely not “atmosphere” but “ionosphere” and radars using this are also called “Over-the-horizon radar”, but these are really low resolution radars with a very low operating frequency (3 to 30 MHz), which is even lower than the frequency of radio broadcasting stations.
The 400 km range of the ship radars most likely applies to very high flying targets, because in 400 km distance a target has to be at a height of ~12,6 km to be above the horizon for the radar to spot it. Most jets can operate or travel at these or greater heights.
Edit: Interestingly “refaction” of electromagnetic waves in the atmosphere is a variable which “bows” the wave downwards and seems to make it possible to “see” targets below the geometric horizon. For the case of 400 km, the target can only be at heights of ~9,4 km to become visible. Over the ocean this effect is the strongest as the evaporating water forms something akin to a natural waveguide for radar waves.
Well if they are flying CAP missions, it would be reasonable for them to just be carrying A2A missiles only, or with drop tanks as well. F-15s did this pretty often during ODS. And for A2G missions, I can’t think of any top tier planes that don’t at least have a couple of recessed missile pylons or wingtip pylons for A2A missiles only, so players are already forced to either take at least a small amount of A2A missiles, or just leave those pylons empty.
Dunno, that seems like it’s just the lighting to me
I’m trying to find planes that would match the general construction of the Wellington, but with a twin tail and so far I haven’t found any close matches
