R73 doesn’t have any western equivalent, that’s the main « issue ».
But, I really want to argue that the Aim9M (and especial’y AAM3) are much better than the R73 overall, just with very different capabilities.
The r73 is very slow, and Its the missile that profit the least from its IRCCM. I find is very easy to deal with them with minor trajectory changes even when you are sub 500m from a stalling su30sm2.
The PL8, magic 2… are much better in general thanks to having so much better accel, making them harder to flare, even if they loose in the maneuverability department
On the other hand, the Aim9M does require specific maneuvering to actually defeat its IOG, meaning that it can be used to pressure an opponent in subpar positions much easier.
in all honesty it just depends on the player some have a preference of firing from behind while others are fine with side aspect. it just sucks for a lot of nato players and similarly for Russian players if they like the other ircm type more they don’t have the ability to use it.

I remember he used to btch about how Sweden shouldn’t get IRIS-T SLM due to not recieved yet (despite orders are confirmed) just because Sweden has more armored Leopards than Germany.

The r73 is laughably easy to flare in most vehicles, by just dropping the AB and popping a few flares.
Aim9M can be used from above 3-4km and still require lots of maneuvering to defeat the IOG, especially in side aspect.
All missiles can be flared, even the IIR are way too easy to flare as of now. It’s just that the aim 9 requires more work to do so

fair enough, I’m not a big fan of the vegan stuff due to being like super sensitive to texture but I do see that being pretty good breakfast.

I think its doctrinal. There is no world where the USA goes to war without fielding huge numbers of aircraft, all equipped with Link16 and with AWACS support. So when engaging off bore, beyond that of the radar they would be leaning on Link16 and AWACS queuing.
So makes sense to me that there isn’t much in it for them to develop a gimbled AESA.
That’s my theory anyway.

I wonder if we might see AWAC’s in future like as a part of maps and as a target objective to allow these aircraft designed around awacs suppourt the ability to fight at their full potential. plus its not like only one nation benefits from its implementation all would get a massive boost in awareness and fight capabilities
