Not going to happen, then.
Yep, and Britain continuously upgraded them, In fact they are retiring โT1sโ that arent compatible with the CAPTOR-E upgrades currently
SM-6 can do a hell of a lot more than PL-17. Itโs an inherently more versatile missile since it was designed that way
Having the new ones be called FGR.4 (T3), et cetera, is a much better idea in my opinion.
But fundamentally, SM6 is a surface to air missile, while PL17 is a specialized air-to-air long-range missile. You cannot compare what you can do with what others are good at
Perhaps.
The question is what upgrades are โsavedโ for them?
F2 with CAPTOR-M, Aim-9M and Aim-120B
FGR4 with CAPTOR-M, Aim-9M and Aim-120C5s + A2G
FGR4 (T3) With CAPTOR-E, ASRAAM, Meteor + Advanced A2G?
Just feels maybe a tad messy. Anyway, we could probably do with CAPTOR -E and some of that advanced A2G sooner rather than later. So maybe a retroactive FGR4 (Early) when there is enough of a gap to need it might be the better option and just keep upgrading the current FGR4 (like they did with the FGR2 for 3 years)
and ASRAAM could also be around the corner (within 6 months I reckon).
I am curious if AIM260 has been dismounted?
And whatโs the problem with that? If anything, itโs advantageous since now it can be launched at altitude and at high speeds
Im guessing you mean launched/fired
There is quite a bit of evidence pointing towards it already having happened but no official statements afaik
I personally would like there to be four Typhoons per nation, one for each Tranche, with increasing A2A performance for each and within two folders.
Folder 1 - T1 (AIM-9M and AIM-120B) and T2 (AIM-9M and AIM-120C-5)
Folder 2 - T3 (CAPTOR-E, IRIS-T/ASRAAM, and AIM-120C-8/D) and T4 (CAPTOR-E, IRIS-T/ASRAAM, and Meteor)
You only have one power section, and slowing down after the power section is exhausted will only be faster with the addition of SM6โs bullet diameter deceleration.
As a multi/dual pulse missile, PL17 can increase its speed at any time to increase its range
What I mean is whether AIM260 has been abandoned, and what been dismounted means in China is to abandon/stop research and development
Issue is, IRIS-T and ASRAAM could come a lot sooner and I think CAPTOR-E could also be needed sooner rather than later. At least it would be annoying to be the only nation without an AESA radar for 2 years because they wanted to add a load of sub-variants of the Typhoon.
Also things like Spear-3s might be needed this major update just for GPS standoff
So might need to be done retro-actively. Like adding an F2 after the FGR4 gets upgraded
No, itโs still very much happening. It just hasnโt properly entered service yet.
No it has not stopped development
Thank you
I didnโt mean that I would like that to be done now, but rather thatโs what I would have preferred happen from the start.
Oh right. Yeah, maybeโฆ But Germany did need the CAS
SM-6 is meant to intercept ballistic missiles and about anything that flies, I think the sustainer on that thing will last enough to match or exceed the range of PL-17
I cannot understand how a single pulse missile can exceed a double pulse missile in terms of range
