Next Major Update - Rumor Round-Up & Discussion (Part 1)

near 0 IOG drift though

Gunjob has a report in for them, the IOG drift should only be a few metres at most when fired at long distance

Brimstone technically wouldn’t need laser either. Sure, “friendly fire” might’ve been a concern, however to date there’s never actually been a documented friendly fire incident.

The Brimstone’s MMW seeker (at least, in the first iteration) had the unique capability to distinguish between civilians or civilian structures (including the “milk truck” mentioned earlier) and military targets like tanks on its own. Of course, as it is multi-mode with laser guidance just in case in a scenario where friendly fire could happen the firing aircraft could switch to laser guidance, though this isn’t really necessary

SAL was added onto the Brimstone 1 in part so that there was man in the loop when firing in contested space but also to enable them to be used against different targets, like buildings and infantry that they werent originally designed for

I thought Brimstone 1 was mmW only, while a later Brimstone DM (Dual Mode) had mmW + laser and every version after that (Brimstone 2 and later) kept the dual mode seeker.

Brimstone DM was a Brimstone 1 that got SAL

Then 2 + 3 kept the DM setup

Not only that: If multiple possible targets are in the area and you want the missile to hit a specific one instead of just any of them, you could also point your laser for a short while (not even until impcat).

So… Was the DM seeker retrofitted to older Brimstone 1? Or were they a later standalone series/block/etc.? :D

Still wouldn’t be necessary.

Just like how planes can distinguish between aircraft by model by using radar to detect intake fan blades, Brimstone’s MMW seeker takes a near-optical image of the target(s) to distinguish between them.

It can theoretically identify a tank as either a Challenger (easiest, for obvious reasons), Leopard, or whatever have you, based on what’s available in the seeker’s database.

Retro-fitted Brimstone 1s

That’s what I meant with the “target database” earlier. What I meant in my last post is the following scenario: You have only one Brimstone incoming, but there are three T72 in the target area and only one of them is a danger to your squad. The missile doesn’t know which one, so it would just attack any. In this scenario you can just pointing your laser at the threat to make sure the Brimstone chooses the correct target.

Interesting scenario, but when typhoons carry 16 of the suckers, I think the British approach would be to destroy all T-72s and be back home just in time for tea, no? :P

i was on abt the MMW part, gaijin has said they wont add it due to the lack of evidence about how to stop broken arrow situations yet there is plenty and the only reason is because a typhoon or tornado can carry what 16 of these missiles and making them F&F and impossible to dodge without hard cover is a balancing issue, and people will kick off if MMW is added to ARMs but not brimstones

Only possible if the close range air defense didn’t shoot most of them down (looking at the new pantsir lol).

To be fair we already have MMW in anti-ship missiles… MMW in air to ground is obvs different and there’s no real counterplay except trying to shoot it down. Good luck with the latter lol

ARM =/= MMW

The question will be whether or not ARM gets LOAL

Which in-turn then could raise questions regarding MMW in the future.

Especially as LOAL was one of the excuses they used to deny giving Brimstones FnF.

Other issues, such as defending against them, could be mitigated by just giving smoke with chaff, now Brimstones shouldnt be affected by that, but when has that ever stopped Gaijin.

Pantsir is only eating because people refuse to do pop up attacks.

Pop up attacks (from my experience) are all that Eurofighter CAS players do (before SPICE 250). They’re quite effective now with just Laser guidance. I can’t imagine what 16 FnF Brimstones would be like.

dont see many people using ASMs as air-ground ordinance, but yea, what 16 f&f missiles that cant be dodged with smoke, and needs either an aps or hard cover to block is insane but people will rage over the fact other air-ground weapons get MMW but brimstones dont

I don’t really see the problem anymore since the Gripen E already has 16x FnF IR+GNSS glide bombs. Not as effective as rockets but nonetheless good bombs (even more so if they would get their top-down attack path already) ^^

the AGM-88E has a MMW seeker for terminal guidance, i was talking abt that part, sorry i didnt make it clear before

Yeah

Issues were

  • Quantity (near equal amount added onto other aircraft already)
  • LOAL (Does have possible LOBL modes of operations + gaijin can just go work of fiction again, ARM will ahve to be a wait and see)
  • Defence (Give all smoke chaff that works vs all MMW)
  • TK (Just made up nonsense, dont fire at teammates and you wont kill teammates)

It likely wont get it then, instead im guessing most if not all ARM will just be C&P of each other in how they’ll track a radar contact. Difference only being what frequency they can track (if they can be bothered with that but given it would buff the Pantsir the most, it will probably be modeled)
