Next Major Update - Rumor Round-Up & Discussion (Part 1)

Exactly this. The SM-6 is supposed to be able to go from a VLS tube to a target upwards of 250nmi away (potentially more but, ehhhhh). I think it’ll do just fine being launched from an airplane going ~600 knots at 10k+ feet.

Its got a pretty big booster section on VLS version that isn’t on AIM-174. So I wouldn’t expect it to exceed 250nmi by much unless proven otherwise

Which one will be better for Air RB?

if they give the 2 center pl12 to j10c it will be better otherwise gripen e is destroying it

Real thing is if they give the Gripen its EWS and access to all its hardpoints. Given the Gripens in game still lack their full hardpoint selection.

The booster is there to get it out of the VLS tube and up to speed so the missile itself doesn’t have to work as hard. The Hornet is there to get the missile to altitude and speed.
Its gonna go about as far. How far exactly I don’t know, but I’d wager AIM-174 will easily go twice as far as the current longest range missile.

Already had it booked off for the other half’s birthday, “unfortunately” Im not sure she’d be happy with me ditching to go watch the dev streams

yeah, thats what I was getting at.

Since SM-6 is a very versatile missile i think its overall stats will be like an insanely good Pheonix

Does the air borne version have the same multi purpose abilities like the naval one?

dont know for sure, i dont see why it wouldve been removed from the missile, but i dont know if the Super Hornet has the anti-surface part of it integrated

Yeah… that’s what I said the first time. The AIM-174B just has so much raw power that the Shornet being unable to reach mach while carrying them won’t negatively affect the missile (too much).

It won’t be anywhere near as maneuverable as smaller missiles like Meteor, AAM-4B, or PL… 15? but it’ll outrange all of them handedly. Which could make it competitive since its motor will probably still be active by the time it reaches its target in-game.

Should have told her about the commitments you’ve made to Warthunder

I haven’t seen anything indicating AIM-174B would outrange missiles such as Meteor, anything that would indicate that?

Honestly…
It might, if it wasn’t launched from a hornet

But there is the problem currently only the super hornet can carry it

Yeah but assuming equal platform did anyone calculate the differences between the two? I also wonder if anyone has info on how much the aim-174b weighs with booster removed

The surface launched SM-6 is supposed to outrange it by a good distance, depending on where you source your information.
And the AIM-174 is an air launched missile… I dunno what else to say, it’s just a logical conclusion.

That is only the upper stage of the missile and is missing the huge booster that is accelerating it

As Ron noted, the big booster from SM-6 was removed to make it compatible for the AIM-174B, it is only fair to say that the biggest source of thrust was removed from it.
