That’s using passive ranging. An IRST on its own is incapable of ranging to a targets to guide a missile, you need to get somewhat accurate 3D coordinates.
Some time ago, we discussed that within the error margin of the PIRATE and the size of the cone at which an AMRAAM can pick up a target, PIRATE should be capable of guiding an AMRAAM to about 40-60km, which aligns with what you say.
Thing is, passive ranging requires specific maneuvers to get different bearings of the target and triangulate its position. This is currently not modeled in game. The EFT can currently use IRST DL in whatever phase of its flight which is incorrect
Ok, i assume it is one of the features that will make its way into the game at some point, unless game convention.
But back to the original topic. You said IRST can not provide correct DL information, as it cant provide accurate information about the plane and the missile, but it can.
First of all, if we don’t consider the IRST issues at getting a 30km lock, it’s guidance with DL of the AIM120 works the just as well with radars and IRST that have this DL capability. This gives an « edge » in two ways : the enemy might be unaware it’s being shot at in the seconds before the missile goes pitbull, and IRST has better gimbal limits than radars in most cases.
Now, it might not be much, especially for the AIM120, but I thought you guys were the first to jump on unrealistic behaviors, whatever small they are. I’m just doing the exact same. Thing is, the EFT IRST should be far less capable at guiding missiles. It’s DL capability is also not really proven but mostly assumed.
As of now, the only 2 planes that should be able to use this mechanic fully are the SU30SM and the Rafale, and one of them isn’t capable of doing it in game
I said that as of now, passive ranging in game is not a thing. The ability for the IRST to give accurate distances is a placeholder mechanic.
Also, my discussion about IRST not being able to give accurate DL was to explain how, without passive ranging being used, such passive systems just can’t get acc it accurate guidance information. It was not for saying that PIRATE didn’t use such systems.
Rafale can walk on water to hear you lot talk.
As I said remove it, it offers very little for how the IRST system functions there is no sensor fusion to use it correctly.
And 120 is nowhere near as dangerous as a MICA it’s only use is in ground battles and even then we would all swap it for Rafles or Su-30s Radar.
Rafale and Su30SM have active laser range finders. If stating that is the same as saying that it can walk on the water, you kinda make Mulatu’s point when he says the EFT is lacking technologically.
That was simply not a consideration for the EFT for whatever reason, and they decided to use ranging, that’s a fact and it’s not going to change by dissing other planes.
Yes and could likely guide an ARHM 50+ miles in game Typoon can only use it’s IRST 120 guidance in the region of 12 miles. Which is nothing in terms of BVR.
ASRAAM and Pirate were designed with the mindset Russia would have Gen 5 airframes and how do we shoot down jets we cant reliably detect.
Which is why I said remove it as it has no real bearing on gameplay.
I would much rather have the dozens of things Pirate is missing added.
That’s why I said both squad and team datalinks, team datalinks would have more since its drawing from the whole team, but squad DL would be nice for prioritizing targets
