No, it isn’t historically accurate (partly). The Su-30SM can guide it since it contains a laser-rangefinder. The IRST on the Eurofighter can fire at a location with some inaccuracy but cannot actively guide it since it lacks laser-rangefinder.
We know it is an unintended change since you cannot fire the missile if you switch the lock from radar to IRST. We also know it is an unintended change since the developers themselves said they’d model passive ranging, which isn’t done currently.
Well, You’ll need to find a primary source that contradicts Flame’s primary source for AMRAAM and Meteor guided via PIRATE. It already had ranging capiblity before this change. Otherwise how would it provide LSZ information without ranging
Good thing Flame’s report specifically states PIRATE fires at the location of the target and doesn’t guide it anymore.
It has some ranging capability even though this ranging capability isn’t completely accurate, and yes there are primary sources that confirm this from the designers of PIRATE.
In fact, the developers agree with this sentiment:
Right now when PIRATE fires the AIM-120s in-game currently, PIRATE somehow provides datalink information rather than the AIM-120 simply relying on its own IOG.
@Smin1080p_WT will xbox players be able to buy the top secret community update pack before it ends on september 1st? I would love to be allowed to buy it.
Correct me if im wrong, but what is preventing the DL being sent, when the radar is not searching? While they use the same antenne, they use different channels. There should be no problem doing so.
Annoying how it hasn’t worked for 1.5 years now. At first, it’d fire several charges to hit a single missile, but it’d still kill the missile. Then Gaijin said they “fixed” the problem, which means it won’t waste 3 charges on one missile now. However, now it just straight up doesn’t damage incoming rockets in the first place now. My favorite part has to be them adding a new tank with a working APS, and the comments on its development article ask if Trophy will be fixed.
Because the IRST can not get the accuracies location of the enemy plane, and if the missile is not aligned between the IRST and the target, the plane literally can’t give accurate information to the missile has to where it should go. Obviously passive ranging could mitigate that, but it’s currently not a thing. As of now, the EFT having the distance to target using the IRST is just a place holder until passive ranging is modeled. Realistically, it should be just like SAM IRST, with only the location of the target for slewing weapons. This ability to have DL with only the IRST is a symptom of this placeholder ability
On another note, it’s weird that they gave this capability to the SU30SM and EFT (with a report for the EFT denied by the devs), and not the rafale
Then i guess sources might be contradicting what you say, as very early version of PIRATE had range error small enough, to guide AMRAAM up to ~40 km. Well within current 30km IRST limit. Was it improved? Idk. But by the current game standard it should be able to do so.
